Flowers Show in Guangzhou
"Walking on the flower street" is a custom of the people of Pearl River Delta which has a long and interesting history. In Guangzhou the most traditional and unique event for the Spring Festival celebration is the flower fairs. Guangzhou is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer and the flowers can even blossom there in winter.
The fairs usually open a few days before New Year's Eve. They come to a climax during New Year's Eve when many people surge to the fairs. The fresh flowers represent luck and the realization of great ideals.
If you go to the market in the evening of the New Year's Eve, you should be prepared for heavy crowds.
However, flowers are not the only product at the market. You can also find windmills which, as a Chinese phase goes, are "turning (for good) fortune". Since "turn" and "rotate" share the same Chinese character, people believe that good fortune comes in the forthcoming year when the fans rotate.
