ZHAO GANG Elected Board of Governors, Society for Cryobiology
By admin on 2015-11-06

According to the latest notice from the Society for Cryobiology, Prof. ZHAO Gang of the School of Information Science and Technology was elected Board of Governors of the Society for Cryobiology, along with two other society members. The Board was co-opted via a society-wide democratic vote. Prof. ZHAO is currently the only scholar on board from Chinese Mainland.

Prof. ZHAO has been devoting himself to the cross-disciplinary research in Cryo-Biomedical Engineering since his PhD study. Over years, Prof. ZHAO and his research group have published several papers in high-impact journals such as Cryobiology and Cryo-Letters, which had earned them reputable academic influence in the field of cryobiology.

The preservation, development and full utilization of life resources will be a strategic priority in the global competition for resources, and the relevant technologies have been playing an indispensable fundamental role in various areas, such as modern biological science, medicine, pharmacy, as well as the research, development and application of biotechnology. International Society for Cryobiology was founded in 1964, which focuses on the mechanic exploration for cryopreservation of life resources along with the development and application of cutting-edge technology. The development of Cryo-Biomedical Engineering at USTC was founded in 2001 by Prof. GAO Dayong, Master Chair Professor of the Dept. of Electronic Science and Technology. In the past 10 years, its development has received funding supports from the Ministry of Education (Cheung Kong Scholars Program), the Chinese Academy of Science (Hundred Talents Program), the Natural Science Foundation of Anhui Province and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and also USTC. After over 10 years of academic accumulation, the Cryo-Biomedical Engineering research at USTC has gradually obtained an international reputation.

Prof. ZHAO Gang graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China as a PhD in 2004. He is now a tenure track professor and a doctoral advisor in the School of Information Science and Technology. Prof. ZHAO is also the Vice director of Anhui Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Bio Preservation and Artificial Organ, and an affiliate professor in the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington.

The Cryo-Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and the Laboratory of Artificial Organs and Microsystems Engineering were founded by Prof. ZHAO in 2011. He has been awarded with the JSPS Research Fellowship and the USTC Young Faculty Career Award (2013). By far, Prof. ZHAO has successively presided four research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. Furthermore, Prof. ZHAO has been awarded more than 20 Chinese patents and successfully developed various biomedical or medical instruments, such as the perfusion microscope system, the portable artificial kidney system, and the multifunctional body fluids and cell processing instrument. Prof. ZHAO has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers in top journals, such as International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, PLOS one, Journal of Applied Physics, Human Reproduction, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and Scientific Reports, etc.
