Located in the southwest of Sichuan Province, the capital of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Xichang, is more than 400 kilometers from Chengdu. Featuring little rainfall all year round, the area has attracted the Chinese aerospace industry to position a launch center here, which is now open to visitors. Travelers to the area can also visit Qionghai Lake, Mount Lushan, Mount Luoji, Huangliantulin, Lugo Lake, Mahn Lake, and Yihai Lake. The Yi Torch Festival is also a traditional attraction for visitors.

The largest hydroelectric power station in China is located at Ertan in Panzhihua. The giant dam is the highest in Asia and the reservoir covers 108 square kilometers. Surrounding scenic areas include the Hongge Hot Springs, the Longtan Karst Cavern, and Sutie Garden.

Situated only 5 kilometers from Xichang, Qionghai is teeming with fish and shrimp. The calm waters and shallow beaches provide good conditions for swimming, boating, and fishing. A training base has also been established for water skiing, sampan sailing, and steam-boating.

The Luge Lake Scenic Resort lies along the border between Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. The Mosuo people have maintained their traditional culture in the region. Some of the unique features are a matriarchal society and a different marriage custom.
