Guizhou University is a multidisciplinary provincial key university. It is the only university in the province prioritized to develop itself according to the criteria of the “Project 211” and one of the high-level universities in western China directly supported by the Ministry of Education of China. Its predecessor was Guizhou Institute of Higher Learning, which was set up in 1902. In 2004, the original Guizhou University of Technology and Guizhou University fulfilled the new merger under the name of Guizhou University.

Guizhou University covers a total area of 3328.5 hectors, comprising of 9 campuses in different areas in Guiyang City, the Capital of Guizhou Provinces, with two main campuses being located in Huaxi, a famous natural scenic spot.
