Yunnan University, located in Kunming, Yunnan, well-known for its year-round spring-like weather and beautiful scenery. The University was founded in 1923, one of the oldest universities in China, was put into the world-known Concise Encyclopedia Britannia as one of the fifteen internationally prestigious universities in China. Yunnan University has been developing rapidly to be the first and only university within the province availing itself of “Project 211” (100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas strengthened as a national priority for the 21st century) membership status. The university is prominent with its wide range of disciplines and excellence of teachers and scientific research personnel. During the early 21st century, thanks to its outstanding achievements in the field of TCSL, Yunnan University was conferred as one of the ten key institutions that facilitate Chinese teaching in neighboring countries under the guidance of the NOCFL (Hanban). The university is designated as one of the few HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) centers for all levels, and has successfully undertook several NOCFL training projects.
College of International Students is a professional institution of Yunnan University where international students register to learn Chinese language and culture. It is responsible for the enrollment, Chinese-training and management of international students, and it also provides them with necessary support. The college has set up the International Students Service Center under the guidance of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of YNU in order to implement better and more equal management and service to all international students of the whole university. The CIS opened its doors to international students in 1986, and has already accepted students from more than 50 countries and regions; the college has also accomplished many Overseas Chinese Teacher Training Projects assigned by Hanban. The CIS began to enroll MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2009, at present, there are nearly 200 Chinese and foreign graduate students have received their master’s degree.
College of International Students of Yunnan University has more than 30 full-time teachers, among whom there are 3 senior professors, 6 associate professors, 4 of them hold doctorate degrees. Most of the teachers have taught or studied in Spain, the United States of America, Australia, Italy, Thailand, Bangladesh, Iran, Myanmar, South Korea, and Vietnam. So they have accumulated a wealth of overseas teaching experience. The college also employs many excellent long-term part-time teachers, who are not only experienced in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, but also provide expertise in other subjects since they come from a wide range of academic backgrounds.
In recent years, the international exchanges between the CIS and foreign countries have increased rapidly. The college now receives over 30 Study Abroad Programs in China every year, with students from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, South Korea, Thailand, Bangladesh and other countries. Besides that, the CIS has established internship training bases in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and other countries, where teachers and graduate volunteers are sent every year to work for the promotion of Chinese language. The above mutual communication activities have won the CIS stronger international influences and a good reputations.
