University Profile
Donghua University (DHU), formerly China Textile University, was founded in 1951. Located in the downtown area in Shanghai and adjacent to Hongqiao Economic Development Zone, DHU is one of the state-key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China. Its feature disciplines, such as Fashion Design, Textile Engineering, International Trade, Material Science, and Information Technology have received high reputation both domestically and abroad.
DHU is a multi-disciplinary university involves a wide range of fields such as engineering, economics, management, literature and art, laws, science, and education. It has 16 colleges and schools, offering 50 undergraduate programs, 61 master’s degree programs, 29 doctoral programs, and 5 postdoctoral research programs, among which are 6 State key disciplines and 7 Shanghai Municipal key disciplines. Academic achievements have found applications in areas such as aeronautics, military science, new material, architecture, and environment protection. The number of patents granted and under application ranks the highest among Chinese colleges and universities.
There are more than 3,000 faculty and staff, and over 25,000 enrolled students at DHU. The employment rate maintains 100% for post graduates and over 95% for undergraduates in the past several years. So far, DHU has established cooperation with over 80 well-known oversea universities, research institutions and enterprises. DHU also successfully held international conferences and forums in the fields such as textile, fashion, and material.
As early as 1954, DHU commenced to accept international students who were among the first group of overseas students enrolled by Chinese universities. To date, DHU has brought up a huge number of international students from over 100 countries. Almost all of undergraduate programs, postgraduate and research programs are open to international students. Besides, non-degree programs including Chinese language programs, Degree-Preparation program, advanced study programs, and a variety of short-term programs are available to international students.

Campus Life
DHU has two campuses. The one where ICES lies, the Yan’an Road campus, is in the downtown area. Convenient transportation can bring students to many places in the city: more than 20 bus lines are around the campus, metro station of line 3 and line 4, station of airport bus line 3 are just next to the campus. Bank of China and other banks, visa office, consulates of dozens of countries, Carrefour and other big supermarkets, hospitals and pharmacies, post offices, shopping mall and fitness centers are nearby.
Two teaching buildings special for international students are in the Yan’an Road Campus, including classrooms with multimedia facilities, language labs, multifunctional halls, music rooms and lounges. Located in DHU’s library, Family of International Student is a cozy reading room providing hundreds of books, newspapers and journals for students to read and borrow, Internet service is available as well. Degree program students will receive support from their counselors and mutual aid teams during their living and learning at DHU.
DHU has several International Student Apartment (ISA) buildings. Private bathroom, furniture, A/C, telephone, TV set, fridge and internet jack are equipped. In the public kitchens on every floor there’re washing machines, electronic stoves and heaters. Single room is CNY 60~90/day, double room is CNY45~55/day/person. Access to internet without time limitation only costs CNY280/semester.
There are several dinning halls on campus, including one Muslim’s canteen. Other facilities to the students are the Student Service Center, the gymnasium, stadium, football fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts, etc.
Scholarship
Donghua University has been appointed the one to accept international students on Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS). Now, a series of President Scholarship has been established to support more excellent international students to join degree programs, besides, DHU also has been approved recently to conduct independent admission under CSC scholarship.
Following are the details of the mentioned scholarships, and we hope our alumni and currently enrolled students will take this chance and recommend more excellent candidates from their own countries.
I. CSC Scholarship
Chinese Scholarship Council(www.csc.edu.cn)takes overall charge of recruitment and management of Chinese government scholarships. Applicants who plan to study Chinese or degree programs may submit the required application materials to ICES before the end of February annually. The qualified candidates will then receive an Acceptance Letter from ICES, which should be submitted together with the other documents to the competent authorities or Chinese diplomatic missions in their home countries within a stated period of time: beginning of January to beginning of April.
II. CSC’s Independent Admission of postgraduate in the appointed fields of study
According to the approval from Chinese Scholarship Council, DHU can independently recruit postgraduates pursuing some appointed majors as CSC scholarship students. 10 quotas available, applicants who don’t need extra Chinese remedial studies are preferable. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, and not study in China. The application dead line is May 15.
Appointed majors: (1) First-class discipline on Textile Science & Engineering (Textile Engineering, Fiber Engineering, Digital Textile Engineering, Chinese Ancient Textile Process, Textile Materials & Textiles Design, Physics of Fiber Materials, Textile Chemistry & Dyeing & Finishing Engineering, etc.) (2) First-class discipline on Material Science & Engineering (Material Science, Material Processing Engineering, Material Physics & Chemistry, Nano Fibers & Hybrid Materials, System of Smart Substances, Bionic Materials, etc) (3) Fashion Design & Engineering
III. SGS
According to the approval from Shanghai Education Commission, DHU can independently recruit international students to pursue their degree programs. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and the application dead line is June 15.
SGS includes: (1) A (full scholarship), 10 quotas available, only for those who apply for Master’s or Doctoral programs. Applicants who do not need extra Chinese remedial studies are preferable; (2) B (partial scholarship), 20 quotas available, for those who apply for bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral programs. Applicants who do not need extra Chinese remedial studies are preferable.
IV. Excellent New Student Scholarship under the President Scholarship
It is established to encourage the excellent self-funded international students to pursue their bachelor’s program learning at DHU, the recipients will receive full or partial tuition exemptions in their first semester. 20 quotas are available. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and the application dead line is June 15.
Applicant Qualifications
