Chang’an University is one of the State "211 Project" key development universities. It was merged by the former Xi'an Highway University, Xi'an Engineering Institute and Northwest Institute of Construction Engineering on April 18th, 2000. Chang’an University has disciplines in engineering, science, as well as economics, management and liberal arts with engineering as its main focus. Highway transportation, land resources and environment and construction engineering are its main features.

Situated in the southern suburb of the world-famous historic city of Xi'an and surrounded by many culture and research institutions, universities and colleges, Chang’an University is literally advantageous to talents in pursuing their academic goals. The university's five campuses (the Main Campus, Yanta Campus, Xiaozhai Campus, Weishui Campus and Taibai Campus) cover an area of 3,000 mu.

At present, the university has 16 institutes and 1 teaching department, 2 mobile stations for postdoctoral research programs, 2 first-class disciplines postdoctoral degree conferring posts, 22 second-class discipline postdoctoral degree conferring posts, 39 doctor's degree conferring posts, 83 master's degree conferring posts, and 75 undergraduate majors or specialties. It provides various classes of Chinese language training and advanced study courses for the overseas students with different levels.

The city of Xi'an (population 6 million) was the first Chinese city to open its doors to the ancient world, not in 1980 under the "Open Door" policy, but in fact during the Tang dynasty when Xi'an blossomed as the first stop on the Silk Road. Over a period of more than 2000 years, Xi'an was the capital for eleven dynasties. Along with Rome and Constantinople, this city was a world leader in culture and trade and played a vital role in bridging the gap between east and west.

Among the many dynasties Xi'an was capital to, Qin, the first empire of China, and Tang, the peak of China's ancient culture, have left the city with the most abundant legacy. The Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, an attached defending army to the first emperor of China, is regarded as "the eighth wonder of the world". The Tang Dynasty has endowed Xi'an even more relics, including the Tomb of Concubine Yang, Huaqing Pool and Dufu Memorial Temple all date back to that period.

Xi'an was the first stop of Indian Buddhism preached in China; The sophisticated system of? philosophy first came to Xi'an 2000 years ago and later being developed into the dominant religion. The Famen Temple in Xi'an is the only temple in mainland China to have true relics of Buddha Syakamuni.
Aside from being a major tourist destination and historical city, today Xi'an is an important industrial and manufacturing center. In addition to Xi’an’s incredible history, it is a modern and prosperous area. Xi'an Jiaotong University is considered to be one of the best in China giving the city has a large student population who contribute to its cultural life. Thanks to its modern amenities and rich history, Xi’an is an ideal city to study Chinese language and culture.
