University Profile
Founded in 1952, the University is one of the earliest four institutions of higher learning established to offer foreign languages in the new China. It is also the only government-run institution of higher learning to offer foreign languages in the northwest. In the recent year, the University, taking a firm grip on the historic opportunity of big strides in higher education and large-scale development in the west, has realized transformation from an institution of single branch of foreign languages to a new type of interdisciplinary sort to cover the aspects of literature, economy, management, legal science, engineering and pedagogy by deepening reforms on teaching and adjusting structures of specialties.
The University takes a total land area of 1,593mu, with a floor space of five hundred and fifty thousand square meters. There are multimedia classrooms, language labs, computer labs, electronic reading-rooms, computer networks, reception systems for satellite-relayed TV, etc. The teaching facilities are valued at RMB¥39.4412 million. The library covers an area of forty-three thousand square meters and stores a total collection of 1.26 million books in Chinese and foreign languages. Moreover, it has an electronic bank of academic journals and document data.
The University has 19 schools and faculties that run 30 specialties under 4-year programs. The branch of Foreign Linguistic Literature is authorized with the right to confer a Master’s degree, which is shared by thirteen more delicate branches of literature. It also coordinates with two foreign universities to train postgraduates for a doctoral degree. English Linguistic Literature, French Linguistic Literature and German Linguistic Literature are all approved as major branches of learning in Shaanxi. English, German, French and Japanese languages are designated as top brand specialties in the province. The Research Center of Euro-US Linguistic Literature occupies an important position in social science of philosophy among Shaanxi universities.
The University has an enrollment of 18,000 students, of whom full-time regular students under 4-year programs account for 9,721, postgraduates for MA reach 633 and international students are 517. In addition, personnel dispatched abroad by the state exceed 300.

Chinese program
1. Degree Chinese Programs:
School of Chinese Studies offers 2-year associate and 4-year bachelor degree programs to foreign students. The programs may be extended to 4 and 6 years respectively.
2. Non-degree Chinese programs:
⑴Regular
a. Fall semester: 18 weeks starting on September 1.
b. Spring semester: 18weeks staring on March 1. ( Students may either enroll in the Fall or Spring semester. )
⑵Short-term Chinese program
a. Spring Session: 4 weeks starting on March 1.
b. Fall Session: 4 weeks starting on September 1.
c. Golden Week Session: 7—10 days from the end of April to the beginning of May.
d. Summer Session: 4 weeks from July 20— August 20.
⑶Chinese Culture Tour Class:
Classes and tours can be arranged upon request. A minimum of 10 students are required for group enrollment.
Applicant Qualifications
Xi’an, historically known as Chang’an in the ancient China, was the seat of capital for 13 feudal dynasties of the Zhou (11th century B.C. – 256 B.C.), Qin (221 B.C. – 206 B.C.), Han (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.), Tang (618 – 907), etc. Rich historical heritages highlight Xi’an as an internationally renown tourist city, which attracts overseas visitors on sightseeing tours in their millions every year. The city marks the point of departure for the Silk Road in the ancient times and has Qin Shi Huang Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses -- “eighth wonder of the world”, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda constructed in the Tang Dynasty, Xi’an Museum of Steles where are gathered treasured calligraphic works of China, and the cultural theme park of Tang Paradisiacal Garden. Xi’an lies where the central and western parts of China join, with advantageous location and moderate climate.
Xi’an is the provincial capital of Shaanxi Province and has a population of 6.70 million people, who acquire higher level of education on the average and communicate mostly in the universally accepted Chinese. Xi’an has the tradition of accepting international students. As early as in the Tang Dynasty over 1,000 years ago, Xi’an, the capital of the dynasty, began to take in students from Japan, Korea and other nations of Asia. In the recent years, with growing worldwide interest in acquisition of Chinese, Xi’an has become a major city for international students eager to learn Chinese.

3. Fees for visa and other ID cards as well as for health examination and confirmation will be paid to city officials in charge.
4. Food expenses: The monthly cost in the students cafeteria is approximately $70.
5. According to the State policy tuition and fees are non-refundable to those who drop out for their own reasons.
