     Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SDUTCM), founded in 1958, is known as one of the most famous TCM universities in China. It is comprised of two campuses covering an area of 129.53 hectares. The old campus is located in Jinan—the capital of Shandong province, at the beautiful foothill of Qian Fo Shan (1000 Budda Mountain).  Jinan, and its’ surrounding area, is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage. Qilu culture is broad and profound and has a distant source and a long stream. Jinan area is known as birth place of many famous Chinese philosophers, such as Confuscious, Meng Zi, Sun Zi and Mo Zi.  It also comprises striking natural landmarks, such as, Qian Fo Shan (1000 Buddah Mountain), Bao Tao Quan (Hot Springs), and Da Ming Hu  (Big Bright Lake).  Confuscious culture has permeated the city of Jinan, and its citizens are known to be very friendly, genuine and modest.  The new campus is located in Chang Qing, a small and quaint town in the country, which is located 50 minutes south of Jinan.  SDUTCM is recognized for is excellence in clinical medicine, pedagogy and scientific research.  The university is on the forefront of TCM academic and clinical education, as well as, international professional collaboration.  Its’ leadership is developing the future of TCM, both nationally and internationally. 
 

 Faculty, Colleges and Pedagogy
     The university’s teaching faculty is well known for its high level of expertise and pedagogical approaches to learning.  It consists of 3340 teaching and medical staff, with 508 professors in total, a lifetime professor, 4 honorary professors (academicians of the China Academy of Science), 167 professors and deans in charge, 452 associate professors and deputy deans in charge, 32 doctoral student tutors and 194 master-student tutors.
It has 14 colleges (college of TCM Basic Theories, College of Chinese Pharmacology, College of Acupuncture and Tuina, Foreign Language College, Art & Physical Education College, Science & Engineering College, International Education College, Clinical Practice College, Adult Continuous Education College and Higher Vocational Education College), 4 departments (Graduate Dept., Western Medicine Dept., Basic Science Dept., and Social Science Dept..), 54 teaching sections, 17 teaching laboratories, 4 research institutions, 6 research sections, 8 affiliated hospitals and 58 teaching and practicing hospitals. 
 

    In addition, the university offers a wide range of courses at different levels. It has established
2 post-doctoral mobile stations, 15 doctoral degree-conferring centers, 26 master degree-conferring centers and also has been authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical medicine. It has 20 undergraduate specialties and 35 professional training directions, which is covering 7 sciences including medicine, science, engineering, education, law, administration and arts. It has about 9971 undergraduates and postgraduate, about 5593 students of correspondence and night-school education and more than 300 overseas students, on campus .
 

    Retaining Chinese Cultural Essence and Creating Brillant Innovation
The university has made incredible innovation in the area scientific research and has achieved a numerous fruitful achievements. Since 1991, it has won 6 state prizes of the advancement and the invention, of science and technology, 240 prizes of science and technology granted by ministries, Shandong Province and some departments of Shandong Province. 60 of them have already been transformed into production. Now the university is undertaking two key state Sci-tech Projects, 14 national research items and 44 Provincial and Ministry research items. The university is regarded by the State Science & technology Ministry as “an important reliable Institution for spreading the technology of State key Sci-tech Achievement” and “an capable institution for undertaking the national tasks of herbal medicine modernization, industrialization and its planting standardization”. The university compiles and publishes high-quality journals and magazines, for example, Journal of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has become one of the national central journals. Shandong Magazine of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been selected to enter into the Chinese journal phalanx in 2001.China Magazine of Rectal Diseases and China Magazine of Image Research in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine has won a very good fame home and abroad. In the recent years, it has edited and published over 1200 textbooks and works of all kinds. It has 32 professors and associate professors who have taken part in editing the “New Century Higher-learning TCM Textbooks of China” as editors or vice editors in chief. 
 

    Promoting TCM to the World and Providing International Exchange
For a significant period of time the university has promoted TCM to the international community. It has set up Foreign Affairs Office responsible for international education, academic exchange and collaboration with foreign countries. It has established friendly cooperation relationship with  nearly 20 universities, colleges, academic organizations, enterprises and cities in America, England, Canada, Australia, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Germany, Israel, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, etc.  It has cooperation with Germany, Britain, Australia and Hong Kong in clinical treatment and with Malaysia college of Traditional Chinese Medicine in running the seven-year continuous classes of bachelor and master degrees with the approval of Chinese Education Ministry. The university has trained over 1000 Chinese medical practitioners for more than 30 countries and regions in the past ten years.
 

    Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reflection of China’s history, culture and civilization. It encompasses a profound cultural and philosphocial foundation.
