University Profile
Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST), founded in 1960 and renamed from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in 2004, was designated in 1978 as one of the key institutions of higher learning in China. It was granted to confer bachelor ' s, master ' s and doctoral degrees. With a scientific research center for post-doctoral students, the university enjoys a complete educational system.
Currently, there are 18,000 students and over 1,300 faculty members on the campus. The university consists of 24 departments or colleges, 12 scientific research institutions and one international training center.
The university, covering an area of 140 hectares with a floor space of 420,000 square meters, boasts 42 basic and special laboratories such as Key Laboratory of Meteorological Disasters and Sino-American Remote Sensing Laboratory. With a total collection of over 1,170,000 books, the library was listed as one of the most completed literature libraries in China in terms of atmospheric sciences.
A total of 42 specialties for bachelors are offered, which include key disciplines in both state and provincial levels and cover fields of science, engineering, management, literature, economics, laws and agriculture. The academic level on atmospheric science ranks the top in China and enjoys a high reputation in the world. Three key disciplines of Atmospheric Science, Information Science and Technology, and Environmental Science and Engineering are established in recent years based on the preponderant specialties.
The university has been actively taking part in key research programs on national meteorological field for a long time and plays an important role in its basic research. In recent years, professors of the university have shouldered more than 600 research programs in different areas, including 113 state programs and 98 provincial ones. A total of 24 scientific and technological rewards have been awarded to the university, of which one is the first prize at state level and four are first prize at provincial level. In addition, international rewards like Award of Excellence of Scientific Achievement of SPIE, WMO NORBERT GERBIER-MUMM Award and Buchan Award of British Royal Meteorological Academy are also received.
About 30,000 students have so far been graduated from the university and many of them have become backbones in different areas such as science and technology, education and administration. Some of them have been promoted to deputy secretary-general with WMO, academicians of China Academy of Science and China Academy of Engineering. Many alumni abroad have become renowned scientists and scholars and take important jobs in international organizations and countries in Europe and North American. The degrees conferred by the university are extensively recognized by US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia and many other foreign countries.
Extensive exchanges and cooperation on scientific research and intellectual fostering with foreign universities and research institutes have been carried out. The WMO Regional Meteorological Training Center, established on the campus of the university in 1993, has trained 568 junior and senior personnel engaged in meteorology and its administration for 91 countries and regions around the world. The university has therefore become an important base for WMO to train senior meteorologists and administrators for developing countries.
Authority of the university will stick to the guideline of internationalization, keep the educational quality as its lifeline, and make concerted efforts to improve its comprehensive capacity and operational abilities so as to construct the university to be a well-known teaching-research orientated university in China and has a reputation in the world, giving priority to science and engineering with inter-disciplines of arts and sciences and harmonious development of multi-disciplines.
