Hubei Province is situated in the central part of the People’s Republic of China. Its longest distance from the east to the west and from the north to the south is 740 and 470 kilometers respectively. Covering an area of over 186,000 square kilometers, the province has a total of over 60 million populations, composed of such nationalities as Han, Tujia, Hui, Miao, Manchu as well as Mongol. Owing to its location in the overlapping area of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-guangzhou Railroad, Hubei enjoys great geographical advantages. Wuhan, the provincial capital and the political, economic, cultural and financial center of the province, is a city of strategic importance in central China and has been known since ancient time as “the thoroughfare to nine provinces”.
Now Hubei serves as one of China’s most important bases of industry, agriculture, science and technology, and education.
Its five major industries, namely, metallurgy, machinery, textile, electric power and chemical industry, are represented by such famous enterprises as Wuhan Iron and Steel(Group)Corporation, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, Gezhouba Power Plant and the Three Gorges Project. Ranking one of the first for its steel, iron and textile output, Hubei is second to none in China in the output of trucks and hydroelectricity. Moreover, Hubei is among those taking the lead in the research and production in the fields of laser, optical-fiber telecommunication, bio-engineering as well as new materials. Rich in agricultural resources, Hubei Province is reputed as one of China’s bases of grain, cotton and edible oil.
Presently, there are 86 higher education institutions with a total of 1.163 million undergraduate populations and 77000 graduate populations. By the end of 2007, there are 18 units with authority to award PhD degree in 579 subjects and 28 units with authority to award master degree in 1518 subjects.
The Province has a long history and was one of the birth places of the Chinese nation and Chinese culture. For instance, Suizhou, a city which is believed to be the birth place for Yan Emperor who is regarded as one of the Chinese ancestors in the Yangtse River valley. Over many years in its history, Hubei Province has brought about a great many of historical celebrities, such as Qu Yuan, China’s earliest great poet in the third century B. C., Li Shizhen, a celebrated pharmacologist in Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, Li Siguang, a modern geologist and the founder of geomechanics, Dong Biwu and Li Xiannian, both had once assumed the most important position as the president of the People’s Republic of China.
With Places of historical interest and scenic beauty scattered across the whole province, Hubei enjoys favourable conditions for developing its tourist industry. Numerous oft-quoted legends and picturestic natural landscapes attract more and more tourists both from home and abroad. The top tourist attractions in the province include the magnificent Three Gorges of Yangtse, the secluded and myterious Shennongjia Forest, the wonderful view of the Wudang Mountain, the profound Chu Culture of the Warring States Period and the well-known ruins of the ancient Three Kingdoms. All, as described, often make the sightseers forget to take their leave.
