Qiqihar University has a history of more than 50 years. It is the only provincial, comprehensive regular institution of higher learning in the western part of Heilongjiang Province. It is located beside Labor Lake in the city of Qiqihar, the famous homeland of red-crowned cranes. It covers an area of 1.25 million square meters with building area of 720 thousand square meters. It is nicknamed “The Round Lake University,” and has been awarded titles of a “Garden University” and a “Provincial Model Unit” by the Heilongjiang Provincial Committee of the CPC and the People’s Government of Heilongjiang Province.

In recent years, Qiqihar University has successfully realized rapid development. Now, it consists of 14 colleges, including the college of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Computer and Control Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, Life Sciences and Engineering, Arts, Physical Education, Foreign Languages, Economics and Management, Light Industry and Textiles, Mechanical Engineering, Communication and Electronic Engineering, Education and Communication, and International Exchange.

The university also has several teaching and auxiliary teaching departments: a Computer Center, a Network and Audio-visual Education Center, a Department of Social Sciences, Libraries, and the Gmeiner Vocational Technical School (the term ‘School of Applied Technology’ is used in the university). This is a cooperative program with SOS Children's Village.

Qiqihar is a major city in the Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. It has 895,000 inhabitants. These are mainly Han Chinese and the resident minorities are, among others, Manchu, Daur, and Mongolians. Close to Qiqihar are numerous wetlands and the Zhalong Nature Reserve, famous in China for being home to numerous red-crowned cranes.

Qiqihar is one of the oldest cities in the northeast of China and was founded in 1691. From 1931 until 1945 it was an important military base for the Japanese control of northeastern China, going by the name Tsitsihar. During the occupation, the Imperial Japanese Army established in Qiqihar chemical research unit 516 for chemical warfare.

A major mustard gas tank leftover from the Second Sino-Japanese War buried underground was accidentally damaged in 2003. It caused major injuries and one death.
