University Profile
Chongqing Three Gorges University (CTGU), set up in 1956, is a state-owned general university under the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission. It is located in Wanzhou, the heart of the Three Gorges Dam Areas by the Changjiang River. It presently has a total enrolment over 13 000 students. Bachelor Degree is available for the students. CTGU has established cooperation and exchange relationship with many universities both domestic and abroad including programs in respect of students, teachers and scientific researches. In 2007, CTGU founded a Confucius Institute at Community College of Denver in Colorado,U.S.A. CTGU occupies the leading position in China in the researches on the Three Gorges’ Cultural, the Three Gorges Folk Arts, Migration Economical Development, Environmental and Ecological Preservation of the Dam Areas. Besides the scholarship founded by Chongqing Municipal Government, Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) by Hanban, CTGU also set the “President International Student Scholarship” and has other preferential policies for the international students. 50% of the international students were awarded the Chongqing Municipal Government scholarship during 2006-2008.
Majors and Programs
According to individual Chinese level and study requirement of the students, Chongqing Three Gorges University offers short-term and long-term Chinese training programs.
★Short-term Chinese training program
It is mainly for exchanged students, exchanged teachers and the people need to improve language skills. The teaching content is mainly practical mandarin courses aiming at develop the abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Compulsory courses include Oral Chinese, Characters, Listening and Speaking, Elementary Intensive Chinese, etc. Optional courses include Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Cuisine, Martial Arts (Chinese Kung fu, Taiji), Paper-cutting, Chinese Folk Arts (including folk arts in Three Gorges area), etc. The study period is determined by the students themselves according to their actual need and Chinese level.
In addition, Chinese Culture Experience Program is offered to a group of over 10 students. For this program, the university will organize trips related to Chinese culture after a period of intensive Chinese training to the students. Besides the tuition, the students have also to pay tourism fee which is under the criteria of market quotation. Details of study period and tourism plan can be set through consultation between the students and university in advance.
★Long-term Chinese training program
It offers elementary, intermediate and advanced classes, the class-size of which is no more than 15 students.
Elementary Class: Main compulsory courses cover Pinyin, Basic Chinese Reading and Writing, Oral and Listening. After completion of study, the students will obtain elementary abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Intermediate Class: Main compulsory courses cover Intermediate Chinese Reading, Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking, writing and cultural courses. After completion of study, the students will master about 3,000 frequent words and the abilities of ordinary writing and complicated listening, speaking and reading. Their HSK level will reach Level 3 to Level 4.
Advanced Class: Main compulsory courses cover Advanced Chinese Reading, Advanced Oral Chinese, Modern Chinese Grammar and Rhetoric, Chinese Culture and Geography. After completion of study, the students will master about 4,000-5,000 frequent words and expressions, 120-240 frequent grammatical items, HSK level reaching Level 6 to Level 6.

Campus Life
Accommodation Fee (Chinese currency):
(1) Overseas students’ apartments on campus (at Diaoyanping Campus, with two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen; equipped with TV set, air-conditioner, telephone, refrigerator, washing machine, computer, and internet interface): RMB¥600 per month (6000RMB/academic year) per person to live in one apartment or 300 RMB per month (3000RMB/academic year) per person for two persons to share the apartment. (Fees for natural gas, electricity, water and telephone are not included).
(2) Chinese students’ apartments on campus (at both Diaoyanping Campus and Bai’an Campus, with a bedroom and a bathroom, internet interface, 4~6 students share one apartment): RMB¥1,000~1,200 per academic year per person. (Chinese students have priority)
(3) Outside-campus lodging is allowed when student gets permissions of his/her custody and the International Office. And a registration shall be done at the International Office.
3. Fee for Meals
According to the living condition, international students can cook by themselves, or have meals in the students dining hall, or dine out in the local restaurants of special flavor around the campus. On average, it costs about RMB¥15-30 per person per day.
Scholarship
I. Eligibility Criteria:
1. Applicants with good physical and mental health, non-Chinese nationality.
2. Applicants tend to study in Chongqing’s universities for more than one year (Applicants of First Category); Outstanding students at Chongqing’s universities (Applicants of Second Category).
3. Applicant of First Category is required to get an admission offer from the concerned university, and the age is under 40. While at least a title of assistant-professor required for the Senior Scholar applicants.
4. Applicant of Second Category is an outstanding student with good behaviors at the concerned university, and love Chongqing.
II.Scholarship provided for:
Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Doctorates, Chinese Language Students, General Scholars, Senior Scholars.
III. Scholarship Amount (CNY Yuan/year)
First Prize: CNY35,000 for Doctorates and Senior Scholars;
CNY30,000 for Postgraduates and General Scholars;
CNY25,000 for Undergraduates and Chinese Language Students.
Second Prize: CNY12,000 for Doctorates and Senior Scholars;
CNY10,000 for Postgraduates and General Scholars;
CNY8,000 for Undergraduates and Chinese Language Students.
Applicant Qualifications
Chongqing situates at Southwest China. It is the fourth municipality directly under the central government. It is on the upper reaches of Yangtze River with a population of 31 million and 82,400 km2. Chongqing enjoys a long history. There are extensive rivers system, four distinct seasons, and great variety of animals and plants. Its beautiful scenery provides rich tourism resources including mountains, waters, forests, springs, waterfalls, and caves. Among them are the famous Three Gorges of Yangtze River, Dazu Rock Carving (UNESCO cultural heritage site), night view of Chongqing, Wulong Karst land formation (UNESCO natural heritage site) and so on.
Chongqing boasts 14,192 schools of various kinds with a student population of 5.94 million. There are 47 universities and colleges with an enrolment of 620,000. The gross entrance rate for higher education reaches 23%. The numbers for high schools and secondary vocation schools are 263 and 335 respectively with 1.01 million students. The gross entrance rate of this stage is 66.06%.
The research capacity in Chongqing is recognized nation-wide. Distinguished research achievements include genome of silkworms that is the first in the world, China’s first TD-SCDMA 3G mobile communications standard and its whole set of core technologies, and the world first JC-A High-intensity Focused Ultrasound System for Tumor Therapy.
Chongqing’s education enjoys a huge market and great expectations for future development. It has a good higher education with quite a number of well-known universities. Its general education has a soled foundation and international orientation. The vocational education system is quite complete and is closely related to the local socio-economic development.

Tuition Fees
1. Tuition (Chinese currency):
(1) Short-term Training:
RMB¥1600 for two weeks of a class with 1-to-5-students;
RMB¥1200 for two weeks of a class with 6-to-10 students.
RMB¥400 per each extra week of training.
(Tuition for Science programs is 10-30% above the given tuition; Tuition for Arts and Physical Education programs is 30-100% above the given tuition.)
(2) Long-term Training:
RMB¥6400 per semester, RMB¥12,000 per academic year.
(Tuition for Science majors is 10-30% above the given tuition; Tuition for Arts and Physical Education programs is 30-100% above the given tuition.)
(3) Undergraduate Programs:
RMB¥13000 per year for liberal arts programs.
RMB¥16900 per year for science programs.
RMB¥23100 per year for arts and physical education and fine arts programs.

4. Text Books and Miscellaneous Fee
Fee for text books is not included in the tuition, and it depends on the class schedule. Students are also responsible for fees of travel, insurance, visa & residence permit, and other miscellaneous expenses.
5. Registration Fee: RMB¥200 for short-term training programs, 400RMB for long-term and undergraduate programs. It should be handed in on the registering day.
