Campus Life
Banks
There are 8 bank branches of different Chinese Banks in Chuxiong, including main banks as Bank of China, ICBC, Bank of Construction, Bank of Communications, Bank of Agriculture and so on. In these places, US and Euro traveler’s checks, Visa Card, Master Card can be cashed. Additionally, each branch has an ATM which will be available for foreign cards such as Visa Card, Master Card or Cirrus network.
It is acceptable for opening an account in a bank for international students in Chuxiong. All of the information will be provided during the orientation.
Electricity
The voltage of electricity in China is 220 V, 50 Hz of AC. For any workable appliances that work below this voltage, it is appreciative of using a voltage adaptor before switch on electricity. As for plugs and switch board, the following five types will be workable: three-pronged angled pins (like in Australia), three-pronged round pins (like in Singapore), two flat pins (like in North America), two narrow round pins (like in Europe), and three rectangular pins (like in the UK).
Health
Medical services are cheap in Chuixong. Next to the international students and teachers building, there is a clinic for University use only. Besides, living facilities are available and convenient. A water dispenser, a machine of 20-25 liter bottle of drinking water and house delivery, will be available for students and teachers. The cost of each bottle of drinking water is about ¥5 – 6 yuan (RBM). It is recommended that students and teachers buy a health insurance before coming to China, and also make sure that your insurance covers repatriation costs, if needed. Finally, a guidance book of living in Chuxiong will be given at the time of Orientation, which will cover some basic rules to get away some common problems and unnecessary troubles.
Holidays
China has 10 National Holidays which will be available at CNU:

- February, Spring Festival (Chinese New Year’s Day, according to Lunar Calendar)

- April 15th, Prefectural Holiday of Yi People in Chuxiong
- May 1st, International Labor’s Day

- July 1st, Chinese Communist Party’s Day
- August 1st, Anniversary of the Founding of the PLA
- September 10th, Teacher’s Day
- October 1st, National Day
In addition to these holidays, there are three days off for Chuxiong Prefectual Holiday. There is one day off for May Day (International Labor’s Day) , National Day and Mid-Autumn Day. The Mid-Autumn Festival comes to on the 15th of August according to Chinese Lunar Calendar during the full moon of mid-autumn. The Torch Festival is also celebrated in Chuxiong, which is a day of Yi people on the 24th of June according to Yi People’s Calendar. It usually falls in June or July each year.
Internet
There are several large chargeable computer rooms on campus, which is available for all staff members on campus. In addition, there are several surfing rooms for using internet near campus and downtown, and are fairly cheap. It charges one or two Yuan an hour, and is opened every day according to timetable. Otherwise, with a total cost of 30 Yuan (¥RMB) per month, the 24-hour accommodation line for students and teachers in plat will be more convenient.
Post & Communication
The main post office is located in the very center of town, and is about 20 minutes distance by walking from campus. The postage of postcards, letters and packages to various places is obvious in the small booklet at the post office.

Restaurants
Dining is convenient in Chuxiong. Eating out in Chuxiong is dispensable but appreciative depending on one’s own plan. Chinese cuisine is a quite experience especially for people from abroad. Most restaurants serve Chinese food, few serve Western foods as pizza and so or forth. Around the campus, there are several cheap eateries, where different choices and appetite can be attained. There are also a number of cafés in town where all sorts of teas, brewed coffee and food are served.
Shopping
Most things are readily available in Chuxiong, with the exception of some Western food which can only be bought in Kunming or be delivered from Kunming within one day. There are many vegetable markets in town.
Transportation
Chuxiong is a small town. One may walk to get most places from the University. There is an extensive and efficient network of local bus which runs from the early hours of the day till late night. Additionally, taxi and mini buses are fair choices with a charge of one Yuan. Usually, the charge of taxi within town is ¥5 yuan (RMB).
Climate
Obviously, the weather in Chuxiong is pleasant, as its subtropical climate, dry in winter and wet in summer. The annual average temperature is about 200 C, and the yearly rainfall is about 826 mm. The rainfall season is from May to October. Just as many people tell about Yunnan: “Four seasons goes in one place, mountain top cold, valley hot. One day makes different seasons: day hot and night cold. Different skies may alter from one li apart.” The same weather can be experienced in Chuxiong.
