Fuzhou University is located in the historic city of Fuzhou in FujianProvince, situated along the southeast coast of China. Founded in 1958, the University has developed in just 45 years into one of China’s finest universities, distinguishing itself initially as a centre of science and engineering. Today, the University also has a reputation for excellence in other fields including economics and management, arts and design, law and the liberal arts. Fuzhou University has been selected for inclusion in the “211 Project”, a Chinese government program to promote further rapid development of 100 selected universities. Fuzhou University is also at the “cutting-edge” of educational reform in China. New programs organized jointly with private enterprises and government organizations, such as the Ministry of Water Conservation and Electric Power and the Ministry of Coal Industry, have been undertaken with exciting results. There are now around 25,000 degree-seeking students and over 6,000 enrolled in adult education. Since its founding in 1958, Fuzhou University has conferred more than 50,000 undergraduate degrees. It has also conferred more than 1,000 graduate level degrees. Fuzhou University welcomes foreign students as well as students from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of China. The University occupies two compact purpose-built campuses. There is a floor space of more than 4.4 million square meters. The University library contains over 1.06 million volumes and subscribes to nearly 5,000 periodicals from China and abroad. In November 1995, the University became one of the first universities in China to be connected to the Internet. Fuzhou University is in one of China’s strongest growth regions and is making significant contributions to the socio-economic development of China and the advancement of science and technology.
