School Advantages
Shenzhen Polytechnic is a higher TVET institution invested by the Shenzhen municipal government for full-time education, mainly focusing on the cultivation of applied professional techniques with high standards and qualifications on the front line of production, construction, management and services as well. Founded in 1993, the Polytechnic, today, has four campuses (the East, the West, the North, and the Overseas Chinese Town Campuses) which, together, occupy a total area of 168 hectares, 49 hectares of which are buildings. These buildings house libraries with over 1.78 million books, laboratory complexes, and many other state-of-the-art facilities. Shenzhen Polytechnic’s Industrial Training Center, for example, includes 28 training laboratories and 116 branch laboratories. In addition, the Polytechnic operates 330 off-campus practice bases. The Polytechnic has sought to provide a model of higher vocational and technical education with Chinese characteristics. Our efforts have been rewarded with many awards. In 2001, we received, for the first time, the First Prize of National Educational Achievement. In January 2003, the Polytechnic was designated a key national vocational and technical college. In September 2003 we were the sole recipient of an “A+” in each of 15 indexes of education in a nationwide evaluation of vocational and technical colleges and, for this achievement, were granted the title of “ Fine College ”. Then, in 2005, we received the First Prize of National Educational Achievement, for the second time, for which the Polytechnic was selected a National Model Vocational College by the Ministry of Education, and was recognized, nationwide, as a pioneer college. The Polytechnic has also been crowned: Pioneer Unit of National Vocational Education; National Advanced Spiritual Civilized Unit; Model Base of the Cultural Industry in Shenzhen, etc. Shenzhen Polytechnic currently employs 1,775 staff. These staff includes over 1300 teachers, of whom more than 80% are "dual-skilled”. We have over 24,000 full-time students and over 7,100 part-time students. These students follow a range of training courses and are granted technical certificates upon graduation. Nearly 40,000 students have graduated over the past years, about 95% of them holding a technical diploma or better. And they are sought after by both industry and government. In recent years, the employment ‘take-up’ rate has also been above 95%. In addition, 53 students and staff members have been awarded the CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) certificate, one of the world’s leading awards in the area of internet studies. Within Shenzhen Polytechnic, there are 15 schools which cater to 95 specialties.         Shenzhen Polytechnic is continually upgrading its courses. One of our specialties has been nominated a key specialty nationally. Many others have been designated national and provincial model specialties. With the support of the Ministry of Education, our Computer-Aided Design course, our Electronics and Information Engineering course, and our Intelligent Building Engineering Technology course are 4-year programs. The 4-year program in a vocational college setting provides for great flexibility in course structure. Each specialty has 3 or more off-campus practice bases and is overseen by a Specialty Management Committee. Our current totals of 80 Specialty Management Committees have established close relations with 1000 or more enterprises and companies in Shenzhen.

The School of Training provides training bases at the national, regional and local level. At the national level it provides China’s National Highly Skilled Professionals Training Base, China’s National Teacher Training Base for Higher Vocational Education, and China’s National Occupational Skill Testing Organization. At the regional level the School of Training provides Guangdong Province with its Highly Skilled Professionals Training Base. And at the local level, the School provides the Municipality of Shenzhen with its Highly Skilled Professionals Training Base and its Reemployment Training Base for the Unemployed. In total, the School of Training offers more than 290 vocational skill training and vocational qualification certification training programs. It is authorized to test more than 100 different types of work at technician, primary, intermediate, and advanced levels as well as vocational skills.

The Polytechnic attaches great importance to research. It currently has 6 programs of natural science research registered and funded at the national level, and in the Tenth Five Year Plan is ranked 15th for research amongst colleges in Guangdong Province. In recent years, we have published more than 2162 academic papers on natural sciences, more than 3373 papers on social sciences and more than 400 textbooks on higher vocational and technical education. Our excellence at the research level has been rewarded by our winning many prizes at the national and local level and by our Polytechnic being ranked first among China ’s vocational colleges in 2004 and 2005.

The Polytechnic also promotes exchange and cooperation at the international level. We have established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with nearly 80 universities and educational organizations outside of mainland China . These include universities and academic institutes in Britain , Germany , France , Australia , the United States , Japan , South Korea , Hong Kong and Taiwan . Seven foreign languages, including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish, are taught on our campus. And since 1998, for purposes of educational and cultural exchange and cooperation, we have received more than 30,000 visitors from other universities and educational organizations at home and abroad.

The Polytechnic enjoys the attention and support of leaders, not only of Guangdong Province and Shenzhen Municipal Government, but also of the Chinese central government. On September 12, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao paid a visit to our college and honored us with a much appreciated speech. In 1997 and 1998, the former Vice Premier Li Lanqing toured the campus, and left written words of encouragement and appreciation. Other leaders visiting our campus have included Ms Chen Zhili, Member of the State Committee, Zhang Dejiang, Secretary of Guangdong Province CPC, and Zhou Ji, Minister of the Ministry of Education. All came to review the work being undertaken at Shenzhen Polytechnic and left praising highly our achievements and expressing great expectations for the future of our college.

The Polytechnic will not disappoint them. Our aim is to be a pioneer in China ’s vocational education and in the City of Shenzhen ’s internationalization and construction drive. We will be the ‘standard-bearer’ of higher vocational education in China whilst striving to become a first rate global polytechnic university.
