Shanxi Medical University was founded in l919. The University is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university with different majors at various levels. The basic policy of running the university is: To base ourselves on Shanxi reality, but face the whole country, we are determined to build our university into one with its own characteristics and eventually turn the university into a training center of the talented, a research center of medical sciences, a service center of medical treatment and health care, and a developing center of pharmaceutical industry. The University will make efforts to become one of the advanced medical universities and colleges in China. The University consists of fifteen schools or colleges: The First Clinical Medical School, the Second Clinical Medical School, Pre-clinical Medical School, Public Health School, Pharmaceutical School, Forensic Medical School, Nursing School, School of Social Sciences, College of Continuing Education, Vocational Technical College, Fenyang Medical College, Datong Medical College, Jinci Medical College, Yuncheng Medical College, and Jinzhong Medical College. There are six departments: Department of Stomatology, Department of Medical Imaging, Department of Anesthesiology, Postgraduate Department, English Department, and Physical Education Department. Shanxi Medical University also provides a seven-year program for students majoring in clinical medicine and offers eighteen other majors such as clinical medicine, public health, pharmacology and pharmaceutics, forensic medicine, medical imaging, medical laboratory testing, nursing, anesthesiology, social work, information management and information system, English, the administration of public facilities, drug preparation, traditional Chinese medicine, advanced nursing, and optometry. It also has nineteen research institutes, four affiliated hospitals, and eight academic research centers. Shanxi Medical University is one of the first few universities authorized to confer doctor’s degrees for Shanxi Province and to confer master’s and bachelor’s degrees for China. The clinical medicine and public health are designated as the national experiment units to train students for their master’s degree. The University is authorized to confer bachelor’s degree of medicine to students in adult education in Shanxi Province. The University is also authorized to confer doctor’s degree in the following seven disciplines: Physiology, Internal Medicine, Epidemics and Health Statistics, Labor Hygiene and Environmental Hygiene, Otolaryngology, Forensic Medicine and Surgery. The University is one of the first few institutions that have the most master’s degree conferring disciplines in Shanxi Province----altogether forty-eight disciplines. Physiology is a major ranked of nation distinction, and internal medicine of provincial importance. Surgery, imaging medicine and nuclear medicine, labor hygiene and environmental hygiene, and Otolaryngology are the four disciples enjoying priority in their development in the province. The University publications include Journal of Shanxi Medical University, Nursing Research and other eight different magazines and gazettes. In recent years, the University has expanded its mutual exchange programs with colleges and universities in the U.S.A, Japan, Australia and Germany. Shanxi Medical University has a powerful teaching faculty. There are five thousand teaching staff and medical workers. Postdoctorals, graduates with doctor’s and master’s degrees, and those who have returned from their studies abroad are among the mainstay of the faculty. Forty-two of them are mentors for PHD students and four hundred of them are tutors for post graduate students. Eighty-six of them are granted the special allowance by the state. About twenty thousand students of various majors at different levels are now studying at the University. The total value of the teaching equipment amounts to about two hundred million Yuan. The University library has a collection of about seven hundred thousand volumes of books, one thousand six hundred different journals subscribed in China or from abroad, and ten thousand discs of electronic books. The library has also started exchange programs of books and materials published in the country with nine hundred units within China. All the students of the University come from more than twenty provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. The graduates of the University are now working throughout the country. Some of them have become distinguished administrators and medical experts. They have become the backbone in medical field at hospitals and institutions of higher learning all over China. The average employment for the students graduated from the university is about 85% and the rate of the employment in such disciplines as forensic medicine and pharmaceutics is as high as 95% every year. A new university campus is under construction to improve the University’s teaching and research environment. The new campus takes up about 1200 mu (80 hectares) of land. The total floor space will be 400,000 square meters. The first stage of the construction will be completed by 2006. In recent years, to meet the trend of economic globalization and to satisfy the needs in medical education reform, the University is ready to make changes to promote the reform with its strategic aim, in order to adapt itself to the competitive world. The University has made great efforts to carry on reforms to adjust its disciplines and majors, and to speed up its steps to promote the teaching, scientific research and the work in medical and preventive health care, and to make the entire medical industry in coordination. The University is making its best endeavors to transform the University, within a relatively short time, from a mono-disciplinary to multi-disciplinary university , from unitary teaching to multi-element teaching, from a mere teaching to teaching-research institution. Its goal will change from mere scale and speed to scale, speed, quality and efficiency.
