| MEXICO CITY, May 18 (Xinhua) - Students from Mexico's Technological University of the Mixteca (UTM) have come first in an international competition with their design for an aluminum recycling machine that can be used by homeless garbage collectors.
The event took place in Florence, Italy.
UTM spokeswoman Hernandez Dominguez said Sunday that five Mexican students participated in the contest organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), competing with 80 universities from around the world.
"The main characteristic of this machine is that its design allows for easy use by the poor, including most of the homeless, even illiterate," Dominguez said.
Mexican students expect support from their government to mass produce the technology, as well as bids from companies interested in operating the machine.
In Mexico, depots dedicated to buying aluminum trash pay garbage-pickers and homeless people 10 pesos (about one U.S. dollar) per kg of cans or aluminum containers.
