Jordan to build first technology university in Aqaba

AMMAN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The Aqaba University of Technology, first university of Jordan's port city Aqaba, will start recruitment by 2011, local daily Jordan Times quoted an official with Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) as saying on Sunday.

Under an agreement signed between the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) and the Aqaba Education Company (AEC), construction on the 100-million-Jordanian-Dinar (some 128 million U.S. dollars) university is soon to start and the university will be operational by 2011 as soon as developers ensure all necessary funds are available.

According to AEC Deputy Chairman Jawad Anani, the university will include five main faculties focusing on specialties in demand in the region.

These include the management and finance faculty, the engineering faculty, and the medical technology faculty. In addition, the university will incorporate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and education faculties.

Moreover, a scholarship fund will be set up for both excellent and low-income students, while a certain number of the scholarships will be allocated specifically to Aqaba residents on a yearly basis, he said.

The Red Sea port of Aqaba, is some 350 km south of Jordan's capital of Amman.
