Senior Chinese leader stresses Marxism study

BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Friday urged Marxism scholars to enhance research on the application of Marxist theory in China.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks here at a work conference of the Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project.

The conference set the plan for the project over the next five years.

He asked scholars to further their studies of the application of Marxism in the country and to innovate and keep up with the times so as to provide "theoretical support and spiritual momentum for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics".

Launched in 2004, the Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project was described by Li as a major theoretical innovation project and an important component of the drive to build China into an innovation-oriented country.
