Shenyang Jianzhu University (the original Shenyang Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute), established in 1948 in Shenyang was directly subordinate to the National Construction Department. In the year 2000, she was transferred to the administration of Liaoing province. She has taken on a new style of inter-crossing and filtering, and of multiplayer education on many different subjects, with priority given to engineering and science, industry, literature, administration, and agronomy. In May 2004 the National Education Department authorized the school to change its name into Shenyang Jianzhu University.

Of the total area of 1523 acres and total building area of 530,000 square meters, the new campus holds 1150 acres in Hunnan New District in Shenyang. The new campus, which is called the the ?°collegial town,?±began construction on August 16, 2001. The first stage project was finished on December 16, 2002. The design of the new campus reflects the idea of humanism and harmonious co-existence with nature. The layout of the design utilizes modern and simple architecture, which is equipped with first-class facilities. The grid form of the teaching area, packed with traditional, Asian-style yards, contributes to the sharing of resources and the communication of all the subjects. The corridor measured 756.31 meters is the longest one in Asia. It ingeniously connects the teaching area, laboratories, offices and dormitories, thus forming a unique scene on campus. The advanced inter-campus computer network and facilities provide students and the faculty a convenient, safe and efficient means of communication. The completion of the new campus has not only improved the condition of the school but also provides us a new platform to expand the scale and enhance the level for us to run the school.

The university has 14 subordinate institutions. 1560 people work at SJZU including 400 professors and associated professors. The University always regards the cultivation of creative personnel with utmost importance. Current enrollment consists of nearly 17,000 degree candidates, including undergraduates, graduates, foreign students, and students in extension and professional schools. In recent years, the graduates have received favorable opportunities in society. In 2002 and 2003 the undergraduate first employment rate continuously topped the list in Liaoning province.

SJZU is entitled to confer Master's Degrees in 18 programs and a Doctoral Degree in one program. She also has six provincial major subject and 5 provincial key laboratories. The Degree Committee of the State Council sanctioned the enrollment of Master of Engineering in May 2002. Undergraduate Education consists of 5 subjects and 32 courses. Among them, Civil Engineering and Architecture have both passed the evaluation of the National Education Department. The university was approved as an experimental school to cultivate excellent athletes in 2002. In March of the same year the subject of Architecture Engineering Technology our professional school was also ratified as an experimental subject.

Teaching has scored great success. In recent years, we have taken charge of 5 national education reform studies, which all passed evaluation and gained several provincial (or departmental) teaching reform awards. The University puts emphasis on the building and management of the laboratories. Lab renewal plays a key role in cultivating creative and independent personnel. Many of the students have won prizes in the ?°Challenge National Extracurricular Science and Technology Contest for the Colleges Students?± and ?°National Math Construction Model for College Students?±.

During the past four years, scientific research in SJZU has made considerable headway. The outlay for scientific research had broken 7,000,000. Of all the 750 scientific studies, 44 were national grated, 332 were provincial, furthermore 3 have won national awards and 87 have won provincial awards. The faculty has published 242 scientific works and 2875 research papers. 132 papers were recruited by three major international data clearing-houses. Some of the scientific research is at the forefront in China, as well as in the world. To adjust the industrial structure, the University has built a science and technology park. In this way we provide the foundation for rebuilding the old industrial base of the Northeast.

Chinese Classes
a) Short-term programs for six months in intensive and accelerated Chinese-teaching programs. Courses include Basic Chinese Listening & Speaking. The purpose is to improve basic language skills by listening and speaking and to write simple Chinese articles independently.

b) One to three years long-term programs include level from elementary, intermediate to advanced level. Courses include: Elementary Chinese, Elementary Listening, Elementary Speaking, Elementary Reading, Elementary Writing, Intermediate Spoken Chinese, Intermediate Writing, Advanced Chinese, Advanced Listening, Advanced Spoken Chinese and Business Writing will be adapted respectively to the teaching materials. After completing the programs, the students will reach a high Chinese communication level.
