Taishan Medical University began as the Loude Branch College of Shandong Medical University. It became an independent school in 1974 upon receiving the approval of the State Council and Shandong Government. Its name was then changed in 1981 to Taishan Medical University. In 1998 it passed the Undergraduate Teaching Standard Evaluation from the State Ministry of Education. Also, with the approval of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council the university became authorized to grant general master degrees and Adult Education master degrees.
The total number of students now exceeds 20,082 full-time students and 350 postgraduates. They are served by 1,439 staff members. There are 983 full-time teachers, and 13 are academicians engaged as visiting or guest professors.
University-wide, we now have 14 departments and 28 undergraduate majors including medicine, engineering, literature, science, management, and pedagogy. There are 5 provincial important subjects, 1 provincial important Laboratories Intensive Project, 16 master degree specialties. The university is continuously strengthening the wide range of medical education and other subjects. It has continuously offered new programs, gradually established multiple majors courses with medical science as its main body with the combination of medicine and engineering. The university is an ideal location for research and hands-on education with a total of 15,000 beds spread amongst 10 affiliated hospitals and 182 teaching hospitals.
The university covers an area of 200 hectares with a construction area of 760,000 square meters. The university now has teaching, science, and research equipment with a total value of more than 110,000,000 RMB. The university has a campus-wide intranet with a connection to the China Education and Research Network internet. The campus includes teaching and scientific research assistant institutes such as the education technology center and computer information center. Students have access to 1,277,800 books, 544,800 e-books, 1417 Chinese and English periodicals, and 12 Chinese and English article databases.

We have been effectively cooperating on the training of teachers, teaching methods and practices, science and research, and medical therapeutics. Also, we have exchanged graduate and post-graduate students with universities in Japan, Korea, and America for studying and research cooperation.
Our institution insists on the plan "with quality for survival, with reform for development," stressing character, developing cooperation, making good use of resources, and the improvement of the overall situation. It does this while continuing to follow our school motto "understanding morality and conduct, discovering the essence of knowledge, studying the truth, and insisting on the truth." This advocates studying with diligence, strictness, understanding, and creativity. Our university is improving its teaching quality by gradually implementing educational reforms and focusing on in-depth education. During the last 3 years, the rate of current students passing examinations for postgraduate studies is higher than similar schools in the province. Our graduates also have better chances in acquiring a job. The rate of employment in some fields, such as radiology, pharmacy, and market selling was above 96 percent.
Taishan Medical University, lying at the foot of the world-famous Mount Taishan. Mt. Tai with its main peak rising 1,545 meters above sea level, in central Shandong Province. According to historical record, Mountain Tai became a sacred place frequented by emperors to offer sacrifices and meditate in Zhou Dynasty over 1,000B.C. Since that time, a total of 72 emperors have been recorded as visiting it. Scholars and poets also came to gain inspiration, write poetry and essays, paint and take pictures. Through this process, the sacred Mount Tai has been the object of imperial pilgrimage for nearly two thousand years, and the artistic masterpieces contained within it are in perfect harmony with the natural landscape. It has always been a source of inspiration to Chinese artists and scholars and symbolizes ancient Chinese civilizations and beliefs.
