Study in Shanxi College of TCM

        Shanxi College of TCM is the only higher institute to cultivate higher quality people on traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and Tuina, Chinese materia medica, combined Chinese and western medicine in Shanxi province. It's the teaching, researching and medical center as well as Shanxi branch of National Acupuncture Clinical Research Center. The college was officially founded in 1989, and qualified in the evaluation of national educational committee in 1999. As the latest higher school in China, it is situated on the western bank of a beautiful scenery spot in Taiyuan---Fen River Park and is about 200,000 ㎡ large. Its building area is about 130,000 ㎡ .

         The school now has more than 7000 students, including graduates, undergraduates, and overseas students. It is abundant in good teachers. Among all the 407 teachers, more than half of them are associate professors or professors. It has 15 teaching departments such as 1st TCM Department, 2nd TCM Department, Acupuncture and Tuina Department, Basic Sciences Department, Social Sciences Department, Chinese Materia Medica Department, Nursing Department, Adult Education Department, Professional and Technical Department, Computer and Internet Center, International Education Center, Preparation Working Team for Clinical Chinese and Western Medicine, Laboratory Center, and Physical Education Department. It has 6 research institutes, 39 teaching offices, 9 laboratories with 3 hospitals affiliating to it. The First Affiliating Hospital (also known as Shanxi Research Institute of TCM) is authorized for master's degree and is the only No.1 hospital of the first class in Shanxi, while the Second Affiliated Hospital is characterized by its “special department skilled in special disease” and is aiming at “Sanjia”(No.1 in the first class). As to the Third Affiliated Hospital (also called Shanxi Research Institute of Acupuncture), it gains its fame all over the country for new nine needling therapy. With 220,000 books in the library, Shanxi College of TCM is the information center of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanxi.

         Recently, the investment in teaching is still increasing and the basic teaching condition is strikingly improved with more than 10,000,000 yuan spent on advanced teaching devices, such as laboratory, multi-media classroom, and electronic reading room. Specialty construction has been strengthened with 13 specialties for undergraduates. The teaching quality is growing steadily, as a result, more than 40% of the students have successfully passed the entrance examination for graduate education in the past three years and the rate mounts the first in the past five years in Shanxi province. Thousands of high-quality TCM worker have been delivered to all kinds medical units and great contribution has been made for the Medicare both in Shanxi and China. At present, our college has been the cradle for high quality of TCM workers with undergraduates teaching oriented and overseas, graduates, profession and technical teaching attached to.

     
           Under the guidance of “seeking truth" which is our school motto, our college dedicate to cultivating high-quality brains who have firm basic TCM knowledge and are skilled in clinical practice. We are trying to reinforce education reform and improve the quality of our students to meet the need of the market. We are carrying out the reform as “enrolling according to different categories, similarizing at the beginning and dividing in the end” this year. That is to say the enrollment is in accordance with three goals as medicine (TCM, acupuncture and tuina, and Clinical Chinese and Western Medicine), medicine (Chinese materia medica), nursing (advanced TCM nursing). In the teaching of TCM and acupuncture and tuina majors, we follow the same teaching plan at the first three years for basic TCM knowledge. For their fourth and fifth year's study and practice, we add special tasks accordingly to improve their practical operative and creative abilities to satisfy the need of market. The competitive ability has been increased as the result of readjustment of courses, teaching content, teaching reform, strict teaching management, strengthened skill cultivation, improved working ability.


       We are proud of our researching ability in basic TCM theory and in clinical medicine. More than 600 researching papers in provincial journals or above and 200 books have been published. Furthermore, 31 series of adult teaching textbooks have been compiled, and 18 official college teaching textbooks have been accomplished. 82 researching items have got the bid and been listed into the technological programs of both the province and the country. The researching item of “herbs preservation tablets” was registered as Chinese herbs modernization example project of National Planning Committee, and gained 10,500,000 as supporting fund in 2001. 4 researching items were registered in National TCM Administration Department in 2002 and 2 researching items were registered in National Natural and Science Fund. All the above represent the development of research works in our college.

        We have successfully offering “international acupuncture training course” for five years to further the communication with other countries and are highly praised by scholars from more than 30 countries and National Economical and Trade Committee, which is the trustor. We also send students to Japan every year for their further study and offer courses for overseas students to introduce TCM to the world.

        Traditional Chinese medicine is a great treasure when people hope to get well along with the nature in modern society which develops in a rapid pace. Therefore, a new upsurge of TCM, Chinese materia medica and acupuncture starts through out the world. To cultivating high-quality TCM brains with skilled operative ability and creation seems to be both the requirement for people's health and social development and the necessary choice for TCM to develop. Shanxi College of TCM will grow and draw a beautiful blue picture in the way to carry forward TCM and to scale the height of science.
