Introduction of Xinjiang Agricultural University
Xinjiang Agricultural University is a multi-disciplinary agricultural institute of higher learning under the administration of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Its curriculum includes science, engineering, agriculture, and economy management, etc. Located on Nanchang Road, Urumqi city, the university covers a total area of over 100 hectare. Its buildings lie in an orderly fashion amidst a profusion of trees and a large variety of flowers. Row upon row of educational buildings line the campus. It has been recognized as an exceptionally beautiful work unit.
Xinjiang Agricultural University is an agricultural academic institution with a long history and a strong academic atmosphere. It was formerly known as August 1st Agricultural College, established on August 1st, 1952. On April 21, 1995, the school was renamed as Xinjiang Agricultural University, pursuant to legislative amendments and notices from the National Education Commission.
At present, Xinjiang Agricultural University is a multi-disciplinary agricultural educational institution of higher learning includes Bachelor's degrees, postgraduate degrees, foreign students courses, advanced study courses, and adult education. The university is currently organized around 21 colleges. The colleges include Agronomy; Forestry; Animal Science; Water Hydrology & Civil Engineering; Economics & Management; Mechanical Engineering; Humanities and Social Science; Veterinary Science; Grassland-Engineering; Horticulture; Foreign Languages; Chemical Engineering; Mathematics & Physics; Cinese Language; Pharmacy; Food Science; Computer and Information Engineering; Environmental Science; Adult Education; Advanced Vocational Technology; Science & Technology. The university provides 43 disciplines that encompass 32 Master's degrees; 4 Doctorate Degrees in Grassland Science, Water Hydrology & Hydroelectricity Engineering, Agricultural Economics and Crop Breeding ; and 1 post-doctor research centre. Water Conservation & Hydro-Electricity and Grassland Science are two key courses in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The university not only has a current enrollment over 20,000 students from various ethnic groups, including undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates, and foreign students, etc., but it also includes an excellent faculty of more than 300 professors and associate professors and 200 teachers with either a master’s or a doctoral degree.
Xinjiang Agricultural University possesses abundant resources for teaching and scientific research: 15 institutes and over 70 labs. The University also includes a 4600-hectare practical forestry center; a 260-hectare experimental farm; nearly 20 off-campus factories and production bases where students practice their skills; and a 530,000-book collection school library. The library is the largest in the region’s agriculture system and serves as the Agriculture Information Center of Xinjiang.
Since its foundation in 1952, the university has completed more than 1400 items of research subjects, 136 of which were appraised by the national, provincial, and departmental governments. Recently, the university has undertaken one project of the national "863 projects," and have already widely applied some Achievements m of research to production. All these have effectively accelerated the local economy’s development. In the last ten years, the university's teachers have published more than 4600 research papers in domestic and foreign academic journals, and over 400 academic works.
Xinjiang Agricultural University places great importance on international exchange and cooperation. On one hand, the university has established cooperative agreements with nearly twenty universities and academic institutes in USA, Japan, Finland, Australia and Russia, etc. and invited more than 100 foreign experts to come for lectures and cooperative research. On the other hand, the university has also sent more than 300 teachers and graduates to study abroad and attend international academic meetings. Since 1985, over 500 foreign students have come here to study Chinese culture, the Uygur language and the Kazak language. While most foreign students have returned to their home countries, the rich experience at the university has enabled many to stay and establish their own enterprises in China.
Since the university's foundation in 1952, over 40,000 Xinjiang Agricultural University graduates from different ethic group have entered every sector of society. All aspects of the university have developed greatly.
