The traditional Chinese medical science is the achievement of ancient Chinese people through experience of daily practice in thousands of years, instead of by experiments and tests in the laboratory. Those ordinary simple people were never able to access to chemical compositions study of the herbs, nor had they ever imagined an operation on flesh with a scalpel. To kill diseases, they had to resort to natural resources like herbs, functional stones. Besides, the relation between nature and the human’s body, and the invisible things inside the body that conducts the operation of the living system were wisely observed and made use of. Therefore, traditional Chinese medical science is right beside the nature, and it would produce the best possible results if it was used in accordance with the rules of nature.
The Emperor’s Orthodox Classic, the most important book of ancient Chinese medicine, said that three months of spring is the time for old things stored during winter to appear and, for all things to grow and boom. To adapt oneself to the development of the nature, one had better foster and protect yang, a concept, together with yin that is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.
To foster yang, there are three comparatively important spring food to be adopted: spring leek, spring bamboo shoots, and spring vegetable. These plants, which are the best options to maintain yang and to treat astriction, contain lots of fibrin, helping the body to digest. Apart from the good flavor, they could be made into all kinds of delicious dishes along with other foods.
In addition, veteran doctors of TMC suggest that during dry season like spring, people should eat sweet food like red dates to keep spleen healthy, eat cherry, spinach, honey, all kinds of spring sprouts, and green onion, ginger and garlic as well.
It is well known in the field of traditional Chinese medicine that the five internal organs correspond with the four seasons of the year and an extra season long summer respectively, having their own unique colors. Liver relates with spring, along with the color green. Therefore, to nourish liver is the essence of maintaining healthy.
As to liver nourishment, the doctors of TMC suggest again that people take more nutritious food like vegetables and fruits, instead of cold acid food. What’s more, expose yourself in the sunlight during spring is a wise way to keep healthy, since the Baihui point on the top of the head absorbs the yang spirit. The sunlight also helps to absorb nutrition and improve immunity of the body. Another advice is that it’s better to sleep not later than 11 at night and get up not later than 8 in the morning, which permits your vital essence to cheer up, and to avoid being sleepy in the spring daytime. Then going out to appreciate the spring atmosphere or to take some outdoor activities would relief your spirit a lot and take the dark side of the spirit away.
All in all, in any season, keeping in a pleasant mode is the golden way of being healthy, and spring is no exception.
