The 19th World Micromachine Summit

Organized by Institute of NanoMicroEnergy of Shanghai University, the 19th World Micromachine Summit (MMS2013) was successfully held in Shanghai during April 22nd to 24th. The Summit was hosted by Shanghai University, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and supported by a multitude of sponsorships, including government, university, institute and industry. Prof. Wu Song, vice president of Shanghai University delivered an ebullient welcome speech to the delegates at the banquet on April 23rd. During the Summit, 49 delegates from 19 countries and regions had a thorough discussion focus on the topic: Smart City, Better Life powered by micro-/nano-technology - Merging boundaries among macro-/micro-/nano-world. This great event was enriched by 17 country/region reviews and 26 excellent technical presentations. Then delegates visited a series of institutions in Shanghai and Suzhou, including Jiading Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, Tongji University (Wind Tunnel, Building Structure Testing Facility), Shanghai Auto Museum, Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee, Soochow University SVG Optronics Co. Ltd., and Suzhou Nanopolis.

The World Micromachine Summit is one of the most important platforms for international exchange of progress and national development strategies in Micro/Nano technology (MNT). Country/region reviews provide a snapshot of the worldwide MNT industrial, academic and government initiatives. Delegates from 17 country/region gathered in a roundtable environment to address various issues in MNT development from the research laboratory to the market place. Since its initiative in 1995 by the Micromachine Center in Japan, Summits with various topics have been held 19 sessions successively in different countries and regions.

The success of MMS2013 and rapid development of micro-/nano-technology (MNT) indicate that in the foreseeable future MNT could and will bring full range of benefits to people’s life in many ways. With the advancement of MNT and people’s fully cooperative efforts, a smarter city will light up our dreams of having a better life.
