SJTU Has successfully Developed the Current Most Powerful Remotely Operated

Captain Nemo roams the depths of the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus, fights against giant octopus with bare fists, enjoys the spectacular submarine forest, and explores the mysterious seabed colliery… the wonderful Sci-Fi experience in Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea now becomes a reality by the “Sea Dragon” ROV developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This ROV currently is the most powerful one with the biggest diving depth in Chinaand is the result of nine-year studies of the scientific research team led by Professor Zhu Jimao of Chinese Underwater Technology Institute (CUTI) at ShanghaiJiaoTongUniversitywith our own independent intellectual property rights. Recently, in the deep-sea hydrothermal expedition of the third leg in 21 voyages of “Ocean No.1”, “Sea Dragon” firstly observed the rare huge “Black Smoker” at the East Pacific Rise 2270 meters below, captured a hydrothermal “Black Smoker” sample with the manipulator, and also collected the microbial samples in the vicinity of the “Black Smoker”. This indicates that Chinahas become one of the few countries which are able to use underwater robots to carry out the mid oceanic ridge hydrothermal survey and sampling in the world.
