Academician Li Daqian Was Invited to "Famous Instructors Forum"

On November 24, 2009, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, foreign fellow of French Academy of Sciences and fellow of European Academy of Sciences, Li Daqian, professor of Fudan University visited “Famous Instructors Forum” of Department of Mathematics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and delivered a speech titled “Retrospect Euler and learn from Euler” to teachers and students.

Academician Li Daqian introduced the life experience and many scientific achievements and works of Euler through the retrospection of the four stages of L. Euler’s lifetime and presented with detail the Euler Line, Basel Problem, Konigsberg Bridges Problem and Euler Polyhedron Formula, etc. From the famous theorem and stories, Professor Li Daqian analyzed the superhuman intelligence, memory, mental arithmetic ability of Euler and his open mind and noble conduct. Life mingled with the academics and the academics penetrated with life, the lecture of Professor Li Daqian explained the profound in simple terms with the sense of witty humor and moved all the present teachers and students. Through “Retrospect Euler and Learn from Euler”, Academician Li Daqian brought an unforgettable “feast” to students of SJTU from the aspects of how to study, how to do research and how to conduct oneself, etc.

At the end of the lecture, the present teachers and students had an ardent free discussion with Academician Li. Li Daqian: Mathematician. Descent of Nantong, Jiangsu. In 1957, he graduated from Department of Mathematics, Fudan University. In 1966, he graduated as on-job postgraduate. In 1995, he was selected the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1997, he was selected to be the Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. In 2005, he became the foreign fellow of French Academy of Sciences. In 2007, he was selected fellow of European Academy of Sciences. Professor of Fudan University, chairman of China Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, vice president of Chinese Mathematical Society, and head of Sino-French Institute of Applied Mathematics. In 2007, he won China’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” in mathematics–Hua Loo-Keng Mathematical Award”. In 2008, he received the title of “Meritorious Character in Science and Technology of Shanghai City.
