Big Money Donor Becomes SJTU Honorary Trustee
Mr. Ren Jiugao endowed Shanghai Jiao Tong University and its Affiliated High School with 8 million RMB used as scholarship, and was conferred SJTU honorary trustee. The conference & signing ceremony of Ren Wenyu Fund took place on SJTU Minhang campus on May 21 with the attendance of Ma Dexiu, director of SJTU administration and secretary of SJTU Party Committee. Mr. Ren Jiugao signed agreement for the scholarship fund with Xu Fei, deputy secretary of SJTU Party Committee Professor and Xu Xiangdong, president of the High School Affiliated to SJTU separately. Ma Lei, head of SJTU Development and Liaison Office, presided over the ceremony.
Mr. Ren Jiugao is indifferent to fame and wealth. He said that he neither specified usage of the money nor asked for the receipt, and he rested assured as long as the money was delivered to the university, because he believed that it would be used where it was most needed. He said it had been the happiest day of his life because he became SJTU honorary trustee and wore a SJTU badge, a big honor both at home and abroad. Meanwhile he realized it was a reminder of responsibility. He said to SJTU students, that they had done quite a good job being admitted to this prestigious university, and they still needed to make more efforts. They need to take responsibility for their country. They should look up to the sky as Premier Wen said to make more contributions for the country.
Ma Dexiu said in her speech that 86-year old Mr. Ren started his undertaking abroad at age of 70, and served his motherland worthily now, which was of great significance to the nurturing of innovative talents at the university. SJTU-ers, especially those who are financially aided by Mr. Ren, should learn from his life experience. When you choose SJTU, you choose responsibility. Therefore, SJTUers must be ambitious, tolerant and faithful. She expressed her wish that if those who are aided financially are successful in the future, they should implement the university motto of “Drinking water and remembering its source” and Mr. Ren’s spirit to make more contributions to the country and society.
Zhuang Xiaofeng, President of Xuhui Middle School, Wang Tongqin, former dean of teaching affairs, secretary Du Shuxian, and vice president Wang Tiehua of Middle School Affiliated to SJTU, and some student representatives attended the ceremony as well.
