Seminar on Prospect of Guangdong Academy for International Strategy Held

June 6 - An appointment ceremony for visiting researchers at the Guangdong Academy for International Strategy (GAIS) and a seminar on the future development of GAIS was held last Tuesday on the GDUFS north campus. In attendance were Sui Guangjun, GDUFS CPC Secretary and Vice Executive Dean of GAIS; Li Qing, Director of GDUFS Science and Research Department and Secretary-general of GAIS; Yan Xuetong, Director of the Institute of International Studies, Tsinghua University; Wang Xinsheng, Vice Executive Dean of the School of Asian-Pacific Studies, Sun Yat-sen University. They were jointed by Lin Minghua, Chen Hanxi, Wang Shuchun, Xiao Gang and other GAIS staff. Presided over by Li Qing, the seminar mainly focused on three topics: Think Tank Building and Government Decision-making, Ideas of Running the Two Periodicals, Strategic Decision-making Research and International Development, and Methodologies of GAIS Projects.

Before the seminar, a ceremony was held at which Mr. Sui Guangjun presented to Yan Xuetong and Wang Xinsheng appointment letters for the post of visiting researcher at GAIS.

The seminar opened with a speech from Mr. Sui Guangjun. He first thanked the experts in attendance for their continued support and dedication to the development of GAIS since it was established last November. Explaining that notable importance has been attached to the GAIS development by the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the government, Mr. Sui Guangjun emphasized that the current task of the academy is to build itself an effective service platform in collaboration with leading scholars as well as with experts both domestically and overseas. It's expected that this platform, as a function of GAIS, will make a significant contribution to the adjustment of the economic development pattern of Guangdong Province as well as the enhancement of its' international competitiveness. In spite of the positive results GAIS has achieved so far, according to Mr. Sui Guangjun, more effort is needed to tackle problems raised in its' start-up period and achieve its ultimate targets.

Li Qing then briefly depicted the four tasks of GAIS on the agenda: to improve the quality of the two periodicals of the academy, to carry on the research on the 12 submitted projects, to develop a series of GAIS, and to make preparation for the "Into the ASEAN" Strategic Forum and the 2nd Guangdong Economic Open Forum that will be held this coming June and November.

Attendees of the meeting actively gave their perspectives on the development of GAIS as well as the problems that emerged during the process. Pr. Yan Xuetong, for example, offered suggestions concerning the goal setting of the academy, the building of the non-government think tank, the construction of the academic platform for research and other issues. Pr. Wang Xinsheng, on the other hand, suggested that GAIS should further exploit the distinctive Guangdong features in it's progress so as to contribute more to the economic development of Guangdong.
