SJTU Honored for the National Advanced Unit in Mental Health Education for College Students

Transtlate The 11th National Symposium on the Education and Consultation on Mental Health for College Students, the most influencing symposium in this field, was held at Beijing Normal University from May 27 to 30, 2010, with the topic of “Retrospect on the Mental Health Education and Consultation for College Students in the Past Two Decades and Its Prospects”, sponsored by the Committee of Mental Health Consultation for College Students of China Association for Mental Health, with the operator of Beijing Normal University and the Division of Psychological Consultation of Beijing Academy of Higher Education. Several corporations and individuals were praised for their prominent contributions to the mental health education for college students in the past two decades.
SJTU stood out from a crowd of colleges and universities after rounds of selceting, comparing and assessing, and finally won the title of “National Advanced Unit in Mental Health Education for College Students”. Mental health education at SJTU has a long history and a firm foundation. The “SJTU Befrienders Counseling Service Center” established in 1985 is the first professional corporation in China that offers psychological consultation to college students. The mental health staff of SJTU carries forward the tradition of “Taking the Initiative” and has made innovative contributions to mental health education. For example, they are the first to introduce equipments specifically for psychological consultation, to build a strategic cooperative partnership with local institutes for mental health, to establish the website of professional psychological consultation and the reservation system via the Internet. In these ways, they accomplished the idea of “Nourishing a sole, lighting up a life” and won the recognition and praise of students, parents, and their colleagues.
