The 4th SJTU Workshop on Natural Science Convened
The 4th SJTU Workshop on Natural Science was held in the lecture hall of Zhiyuan School from May 29 to 30, with the topic of “Soft Condensed Matter”. Fourteen scholars from 8 prestigious universities, including Princeton University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Florida Atlantic University, Tohoku University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, made reports.
SJTU President Zhang Jie delivered a welcome speech to all the scholars attending the workshop. On the significance of the workshop, he said, “China has been paying more attention to scientific research in the past ten years with the number of papers published soaring. However, this didn’t contribute as much to the development of science and technology, mainly because most of the research in the past ten years is paper-oriented. On that condition, it is of great significance to hold a workshop to the problem-oriented research. We hope more researchers will join the innovative, problem-oriented research.”
In the afternoon of May 30, Prof. Zheng Ping and Prof. Liu Hong made reports on two issues of the last workshop — “Micro/Nanoscale transportand its applications” and “The applications of unsteady vortex dynamics on airplanes” which were discussed by the participants. The 4th SJTU Workshop on Natural Science, co-operated by the SJTU Zhiyuan School and the Academy of Natural Science, will promote the cooperation between SJTU and other academies at home and abroad in the field of soft condensed matter, and help SJTU to be more competitive in the research of new areas.
