On July 15th, 2010, SJTU and Gan Business Group signed a cooperative agreement to build the SJTU-Gan Shang High Temperature Superconductor Technology R&D Center. Based on the principle of “complementary strengths, mutual benefits, practical results, and common development”, the two parties made joint efforts to promote the research and industrialization of second-generation high temperature superconductor manufacturing technology. The R&D center has two branch institutes. The bench-scale one is located at SJTU to conduct applied basic researches and the pilot-scale one is built in Pudong New Area for large-scale production. Gan Shang United Group will invest more than 50,000,000 RMB in constructing the basic research lab at SJTU within 3 years.

President Zhang Jie attended the signing ceremony and made a speech. On behalf of SJTU, Vice President Wu Dan signed the cooperative agreement with Gan Shang United Group. President Deng Kaiyuan, General Manager Qiu Wei, Executive President Hu Zhupin of Gan Shang United Group, leaders and experts from Physics Department and institutes of SJTU were also present at the ceremony.

In National Outline for Medium and Long-term Science and Technology Development Planning (2006-2020) ,high temperature superconductor technology is identified as one of the forefront new material technologies and one of the most important factors in the upgrade of high technology and the development of new industries in the future. Second-generation high temperature superconductor has been a hot research objective in the field of superconducting materials in recent years due to its vast carrying capacity. To develop second-generation high temperature superconductor manufacturing technology with high performance-price ratio and market competitiveness for large-scale and sustainable production is of strategic importance for the boom of semiconductor technology in China.

SJTU is utilizing its technical advantages in high temperature superconductor technology to provide service in various related fields like new product R&D, corporate development strategy, technology innovation, and talent nurturing. The focus of R&D work will be placed on the exploration of new materials, new processing technologies, new methods and the improvement of major performance indexes of second-generation high temperature superconducting materials. Gan Shang United Group will be in charge of fund-raising, financial investment and industrialization of technology to gradually have a solid foothold in the market of high temperature superconducting material manufacturing and other relevant applied fields.
