A Brief Introduction to Xinjiang University
Founded in 1924, Xinjiang University (XJU) is the oldest university in Xinjiang, with a wide range of academic disciplines offered at the university. Xinjiang University is recognized nationally as a comprehensive university and is one of the national “211 Project” universities (a system of accreditation for universities) in China. In 2000, XJU was listed as a comprehensive university for further development in the Great West Project of China. In 2004, XJU became a university sponsored by both the MOE and the government of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. With preponderant subjects in regional studies, XJU was chosen as one of project universities of USCO in 2010. XJU has three campuses covering an area of about 730 acres and buildings totaling 1,000,000 square meters.
 
Geographic Location
XJU boasts for the beautiful environment and is close to the International Bazaar which is one of the Urumqi’s national cultural and business centre. XJU stands between International Business & Trade Base and Western Region International Trade Base. It is also neighboring Bian Jiang Hotel and the Bianjiang World Trade Base (centers for trade with Central Asian countries). XJU offers students convenient transportation and living conditions.
 
Basic Information About Study Options at XJU
 
1. Academic Disciplines
Xinjiang university is the only university in Xinjiang that offers well-integrated development of multiple disciplines including Philosophy, Economics, Law, History, Sciences, Engineering and Management. XJU provides 80 undergraduate specialty disciplines, 8 master-degree programs and 153 master programs for professionals.Besides, it offers 47 doctorate-programs and 9 workstations for postdoctoral studies.
 
2. Faculty
Currently, XJU has 2 teaching groups under the state level, 9 teaching groups under the provincal level. We have more than 1664 professional teachers including 204 professors and 599 associate professors. There are 352 teachers with doctoral degrees, 609 with master degrees among faculty in XJU. There are 85 supervisors for the doctorate students and 494 for masters students. At present, XJU has 1 academician of CAE, 35 academic experts have been given a special allowance granted by the national government. 5 experts have been given the title of “National Middle-aged or Young Experts of Outstanding Achievement”, 13 have been honored with the “Regional Award for Distinguished Teachers”, 14 have received the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Regional “Award for Excellent Experts”, 2 have been admitted to the “National Talent Pool Program”and 7 to “New Century Exellent Talent Support Scheme” offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE), 7 distinguished professors and 7 chair professors titled as the “Tianshan Scholar Award Scheme”.
 
3. The Students and Conditions
Xinjiang University consists of 23 colleges with more than 26,000 students enrolled. Among them are 19,000 undergraduate students, 230 doctoral and 3400 master degree candidates and over 500 overseas students.
 
XJU possesses advanced teaching and research equipment and facilities such as multimedia classrooms, language labs and experimental high-tech labs. The modern library of XJU has been equiped with advanced facilities and owes a collection of about 2550000 volumes of books, plus more than 30000GB data sources. As well as the university has Gymnasium is a first-class multi-function Gymnasium in Northwest China.
4. Living Conditions
The main campus of Xinjiang University has all kinds of restaurants, supermarkets,bookstores, grocery stores and fruit shops,etc. The campus boasts advanced stadium, playcourt and gym for play badminton,basketball and other activities.First-class facilities and services are easily available in the new accommodation building for int’l students, which is located center of campus, near the lake, students can fully enjoy themselves in the Chinese and western food restaurants, laundary, kitchen and multi-functionalleisure hall. The accommodation is indeed an ideal place for life and study.
 
5. International Cooperation and Exchanges
The university adheres to the development target of internationalization and pays great attention to the continuous expansion of cooperation and exchanges. XJU has established exchange agreements and teaching and researching cooperation relationship with over 134 institutions of higher education in more than 30 countries including USA, England, France, Germany, Russia, Japan and Kazakhstan.
 
International Education and the Teaching ofas a foreign Languages
 
XJU began to recruit overseas students in 1985, in order to the academic level and management of overseas students, and work on the international promotion of Chinese Language and International cooperative education; the XJU set up International Cultural Exchange College in January, 2008.
 
1. Courses
 
●Chinese Language Program
In order to improve the Chinese language knowledge of overseas students, the International Cultural Exchange College of XJU offers language skills courses including reading, speaking, listening, and writing. It also offers students courses in Chinese liberal arts including Chinese Culture and literature such as Chinese Culture, Chinese Folk Customs, Chinese Cultural Geography, Business Chinese and Newspaper Reading. Students also have the opportunity to improve their Chinese language level and understanding of Chinese culture in other electives such as Wu shu, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper-cuts and Hand Made. Each year the college selects students to participate in short-term courses at local elementary and high schools and the Confuscius Institute (a well known college for preparation of foreign teachers to teach Chinese).
 
 
●Degree Programs
International Cultural Exchange College now offers undergraduate program and postgraduate program at Business Chinese and Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSL). International applicants for degrees in academic disciplines other than Chinese Language and Chinese cultural studies, can also study at XJU and take related courses with local students.
Note: Undergraduate program at Business Chinese can be directly enrolled without Chinese proficiency level, the schooling is usually 4 years. After the completion of the prescribed courses, a diploma and Bachelor's Degree of Xinjiang University are granted
2. Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)
XJU is registered to provide and supervise the National Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) for overseas students. The International Cultural Exchange College takes responsilility for organizing the HSK examination for international students from all over Xinjiang. In recent years, the College has fostered a significant number of overseas students to take this exam, XJU students tops the list of this region.
 
3. Campus Extra-Curricular Activities
The International Cultural Exchange Collgege of XJU not only develops student’s language skills, but also offers them opportunities to participate in various social events. Every semester, the college regularly organizes the multiple cultural and art activities such as writing, reading, singing, football contest and the talent show.
 
Application Information for International Students
1. Application Qualifications
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, senior high school graduates, over 18 and under 55 years old, and with high moral integrity.
2. Application Materials
Applicants should provide the following application materials truly and correctly in Chinese or in English (4 copies)
① “Application Form for Overseas Students to Study at Xinjiang University”
② 2-inch color photograph with white background
③ Copy of valid passport
④ Copy of the applicant's latest academic diploma
⑤ Personal Resume
⑥ Non-criminal Certificate
⑦ Certificate of physical examination
NotesApplicants for undergraduate programs, MA Programs and doctorate-programs are required to provide a notarized copy of their highest diploma, academic transcripts and HSK certificate. Applicants for undergraduate programs should submit HSK grade 3; for MA Programs and doctorate-programs should submit HSK grade 4.
 
3. Fees
① Tuition (Note: Tuition fees pay by credit card , cash is not acceptable)
Tuition for Chinese language Program:           13000 RMB/year,  6500 RMB/6-month
Tuition for Undergraduate Program(Chinese):    15000 RMB/year(Liberal Arts)
18000 RMB (Science)
Tuition for Undergraduate Program(English):    20000 RMB/year(Liberal Arts)
23000 RMB (Science)
Tuition for MA Program:             25000RMB (Liberal Arts),  28000 RMB(Science)
Tuition for doctorate programs          30000RMB (Liberal Arts),  33000 RMB(Science)
Tuition for Research Programs:        3600RMB/month
② Application Fee:400RMB/person (Note: application fee and materials are non-refundable under any circumstances).
③Students must pay the insurance along with tuition fees upon enrolment:
600 RMB/year, 300RMB/6-month
④Accommodation Fee:                Twin Room:  600 RMB/person/month
                                                   Single Room: 1200 RMB/person/month
4. Application Period
Autumn Semester: (from Sep.)    1st April to 30th June
Spring Semester:  (from Mar.)   1st October to 30th December
Note:Degree Program students are required to register in September.
