Project Hope students share joyous moment with Malaysians

Some 200 students and teachers from China and Malaysia shared a two-hour joyous moment together at a carnival held on Saturday near here.

About more than 100 students and teachers involved in China's Project Hope and 70 Malaysian students gathered at Malaysia's New Era College (NEC) where both parties showcased their cultural performances.

The students from China brought on stage the cultural dances of several ethnic groups of China, while the Malaysian students did the Malay, Chinese and Indian dances.

To promote interaction further, the organizer arranged for China's students to present gifts to the local performers, creating a touching scene.

Students from both countries were also invited on stage to dance together before the carnival came to an end.

Zhou Biaoliang, a headmistress of a primary school in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was a former student sponsored by China's late leader Deng Xiaoping.

Zhou said the Project Hope was now focusing more on preparing better infrastructure for schools in rural areas such as building libraries and providing computer access to students.

Zhou also said that the Project Hope had assisted many people in her village, paving ways for quite a number of students to be enrolled in universities.

China Youth Development Foundation's Secretary-General Tu Meng said that this was the first time the students sponsored by the Project Hope to go overseas in such a large group.

Tu said the trip was meant to show the Project Hope's progress since its inception 20 years ago.

He also said that the trip would allow the Project Hope to accelerate its development process, while establishing collaboration with relevant parties so to benefit more needy students.

NEC's Principal Pua Eng Chong said he was excited to see that the poor students from China had the opportunities to go abroad.

Hoping that more students from China would visit Malaysia, Pua said he look forward to seeing mutual assistance between China and Malaysia.
