Confucius Institutes Increase Contact with Central Asia’s People

Transtlate Central Asian youths in Kazakhstan, Kirghizia and Tajikistan are showing increasing interest in learning Chinese. Many of these young people study Chinese culture and language in the Confucius Institutes in their respective countries.
At present, several universities in Northwest China, such as Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Normal University and Lanzhou University have established Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classroom in Central Asia.
Prof. Nurian Akhmetova, the former president of the Confucius Institute of Kyrgyz National University said that there has been a sharp rise in Kirghizian people learning Chinese since 2005, amongst them are professors, public officials, college students, and businessmen. Many of them learn Chinese language and culture at Confucius Institutes in their free time after work.
One Kirghizian student,studying at the Xinjiang University, told a reporter that it is popular to study Chinese among Kirghizia youth. He added that it is more practical to study Chinese language and experience Chinese culture at the Confucius Institutes than from text books.
Guo Weidong, dean of Xinjiang Normal University’s school of international cultural exchanges said the university had established two Confucius Institutes at Kyrgyz National University and Tajikistan National University by the end of 2009. Over 3, 000 students are currently studying at the institutes.
Both domestic and foreign experts and scholars all agree that an increase in numbers of Chinese learners is the result of China’s growing and comprehensive national strength. Guo notes that the Confucius Institute is a significant cultural symbol, and China takes a proactive stance towards relations with all countries.
