To commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Shanghai Liberation and celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), recently, the book "Noble Men-the Urban Soul and the Roster of Heroes" was grandly published. The book includes 60 luminaries and 2 model hero groups from various times and different areas since the liberation of Shanghai. Five alumni of SJTU were selected and they are Dong Yinchu, patriotic overseas Chinese, Zhang Disheng, the father of China's reconstructive surgery, Yang You, the ship's successor, Chen Zhu, academician of "three kingdoms", and Liu Jianhang, the soldier of the metro.

These 60 heroes were selected by the centralized display of "the Urban Soul and the Roster of Heroes-to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Shanghai Liberation" sponsored by the Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the CPC, the online voting of over 2.5 million netizens and the appraisal of experts. They have made great contributions to the development and prosperity of Shanghai. The national spirit, spirit of the times, urban spirit and patriotism they displayed, and their deeds and graceful bearing are deeply engraved on people's mind.

Wang Zhongwei, director of Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the CPC, pointed out in the preface that these "noble men" who have contributed silently to the construction and development of Shanghai and led the urban spirit are the pride of Shanghai City, and also the spiritual strength to inspire Shanghainese to carry forward the glorious tradition, bear in mind the historical mission, maintain high morale, and achieve new performance for another rise of Shanghai.

The five alumni of SJTU are the pride of Shanghai and also the pride of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Let us review their stories, feel the national spirit and the spirit of the times they pass on, and follow their example to never forget where one's happiness comes from, dedicate ourselves to our work and make greater contributions to the prosperity of the motherland and the development of the university.

Patriotic overseas Chinese-Dong Yinchu (1915-2009)

The famous patriotic overseas Chinese, honorary chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party. Ancestral home is in Hefei, Anhui province. In 1938, he graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1939, he resided abroad in Indonesia. In 1947, he returned Shanghai to settle down and served as the manager of Indonesian Jianyuan Co. Ltd. Shanghai Branch. After the founding of the PRC, he successively served as deputy general manager of Shanghai Foreign Trade Corporation of Public-Private Joint Management, vice chairman and chairman of Shanghai Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, director of the Shanghai Municipal Committee, China Zhi Gong Party, vice chairman, acting chairman and chairman of China Zhi Gong Party, etc. In 1993, he was elected vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee. He has proposed many positive suggestions and comments to China's economic and social development, multi-party cooperation and cross-strait reunification which have a wide social impact.

The father of China's reconstructive surgery-Zhang Disheng (1916-)

A specialist in reconstructive surgery, microsurgery and craniofacial surgery. Ancestral home is in Wuxi, Jiangsu. Currently he is the honorary director of Shanghai Institute of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, tenured professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1996, he was selected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He created and developed China's lymphatic medicine, and established the limb lymphedema model and its observation targets. He initiated China's craniofacial surgery. In the field of organ reconstruction, as one of the founders of the microsurgery, he applied the microsurgical techniques into the reconstructive surgery, which broke through the traditional domain of "plastic surgery" and formed the new notion of "reconstructive surgery" which combined the contouring and functional recovery together.

The ship's successor-Yang You (1917-)

The famous ship engineering expert, educator and social activist. Ancestral home is in Jurong, Jiangsu. Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1981, he was selected academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He once took charge of the design of "Yingzhou" cruise ships, the 15000-ton self-discharging coal ships, 5000-ton near-sea dry cargo vessels, 15000-ton economic ocean dry cargo vessels and many other types of ships. He was the first to initiate the developing of computer integrated manufacturing system for marine cargo ship design. He is the pioneer in computer-aided design, technical and economical evaluation of ship, analysis of marine transportation system, and other new disciplines of ship design. He is also the founder of China's ship history research discipline and has made important contributions to the development of China's modern shipbuilding industry and personnel training.

Academician of "Three Kingdoms"-Chen Zhu (1953-)

Molecular biologist. Ancestral home is in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. The current minister of Ministry of Health of the PRC. Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. Foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, American Academy of Medical Sciences, European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities, the European Academy of Sciences, and French Academy of Sciences. Honorary fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and British Academy of Medical Sciences. The foreign member of the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. In the study on human leukemia, he has made significant contributions to the expounding of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and the cellular and molecular mechanism of arsenic trioxide treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and opened up a whole new way for the selective differentiation and apoptosis therapy of the tumor.

The "Soldier" of the Metro-Liu Jianhang (1929-)

He is a Specialist in tunnels and the underground engineering. His ancestral home is in Shenze, Hebei. The current senior advisor in Shentong Metro Group Co. Ltd. In 1995, he was selected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He created the "space-time effect" theory of deep excavation, wrote the first technical monograph on deep excavation engineering "Handbook of Pit Engineering" and China's first monograph on shield tunnel "Shield Tunnel". His pioneering shield tunneling method, immersed tube method, continuous open caisson construction technology, subway tunnel segment with the diameter of 6.2 M, shield construction technology in urban areas and the open cut method for underground foundation pits, top-down construction method, construction technology for shield boring across the buildings and other new technologies have been widely used in the metro industry.
