Chinese Physical Society 2009 Fall Meeting Was Held at SJTU
CPS 2009 Fall Meeting was held on Minhang Campus of ShanghaiJiaoTongUniversityfrom September 17 to 20. Over 1500 people in the field of physics were present at the grand ceremony to discuss and exchange views with each other. Ma Dexiu, the Secretary of CPC in SJTU, gave a speech at the opening ceremony, and Academician Zhang Jie, President of SJTU, presented a written statement.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Ji Xiangdong, head of Department of Physics, SJTU. Jin Xiaofeng, the organizing committee convenor and professor of FudanUniversity, briefed on the general situation of the meeting. At the meeting, the 2008-2009 Annual Prize in Physics of CPS was awarded under the auspices of Yang Guozhen, director-general of CPS. Professor Yan Yanlai from Department of Physics, SJTU won Xie Xide Prize for Physics. Later on, Yang Fujia, Shen Zhixun, Zhang Xiang, and Martial Ducloy four experts gave excellent plenary lectures. Academician Lei Xiaolin from Department of Physics, ShanghaiJiaoTongUniversityhosted the seminar.
“The Fall Meeting” is the series of academic conferences sponsored by Chinese Physical Society, with the aim to provide opportunities for experts in various fields of physics to gain mutual understanding and communication. The meeting was formerly known as “”Physics Seminar on Cutting-edge Issues”. It has been renamed the “Chinese Physical Society Fall Meeting” since 2000. And this year is the 11th. With the collaborative efforts devoted by the conference organizing committee and the Chinese Physical Society, “Fall Meeting” has received active consent from physicists in various fields, and gradually raised concern of the international physics community. At present, the “Fall Meeting has become the largest and the most comprehensive academic event in Chinese physics community.
The number of the online registration for this meeting reached 1540, with 4 plenary lectures, 268 invited lectures, 503 general reports, 82 pasting posters and altogether 858 reports. The reports covered 17 topics, including particle physics, field theory and cosmology, nuclear physics and accelerator physics, atomic and molecular physics, photophysics, plasma physics, nano and mesoscopic physics, surface and low-dimensional physics, semiconductor physics, strongly correlated superconductivity physics, magnetism, soft condensed matter physics, quantum information, computational physics, complex systems and cross-disciplinary physics, dielectric physics, physics teaching and LCD, etc. The meeting also organized the second session of the ninth council of the CPS, the sodality of heads of Department of Physics (or deans of School of Physics), roundtable meeting of female physicists, seminar of “Physics” Journal, the China-Korea Physical Society Exchange Meeting, workshop on numerical simulation, domestic and foreign well-known academic journal report, and new instrument and book exhibitions, and many other activities. Besides the academic discussion, the exhibitions on research and teaching equipments and books were also held at the meeting.
Secretary Ma Dexiu, in behalf of SJTU, extended a warm welcome to the delegates to the conference. She said that since 1999 when Chinese Physical Society Fall Meeting was first held, the number of the delegates had been constantly increasing together with continuously expanding reporting areas and ever-expanding influence. For over 100 years, Physics in SJTU and Chinese physical discipline have stuck together in difficulty and gained common development. Future-oriented, the university established the leap-forward development strategy of arts and science. The status of physics as fundamental has been even consolidated and reinforced. She expected that the development of SJTU physics could be supported by experts and scholars, and wished the meeting a complete success.
Academician Zhang Jie, President of SJTU, is the convenor of the previous ten sessions of Chinese Physical Society Fall Meeting. He participated and witnessed the development and growth process of the “Fall Meeting”. Since he was in Beijingto attend the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party, he entrusted Jin Xiaofeng to give the written statement. He said that eleven years ago, he and Jin Xiaofeng shared one dream that China would become world’s great power in physics, and the annual meeting of Chinese Physical Society would have the same influence in the world as the annual meeting of American Physical Society. To realize this dream, the two generations of the organizing committee and over one hundred physicists as the committee members of the two sessions unremittingly support and cherish the meeting. The number of participants has been extended from the formerly over 100 to more than 1500, and the meeting becomes the grand meeting with certain international influence in Chinese physical field. “SJTU is the university which takes gratefulness and obligation as its school motto, the university which takes practicality and innovation as the university spirit, and meanwhile it is also the university which brims with passion and dreams. The research on physics requires rigorousness and practicality, and in the meantime, it needs passion and dreams.” Zhang Jie hoped that they could keep supporting and cherishing this meeting, to witness the process of China’s becoming a great power in physics. The meeting bestowed the 2008-2009 Physics Prize of the Annual Meeting of Chinese Physical Society. 12 people won the eight prizes. Zhou Xingjiang and Yuan Youjin won the Hu Gangfu Physics Prize; Long Guilu won the Rao Yutai Physics Prize; Chen Xianhui and Wang Nanlin won the Ye Qisun Physics Prize; Zou Bingsong and Xu Furong won the Wu Youxun Physics, Zheng Zhijian won the Wang Ganchang Physics Prize, Zou Yaming and Yan Yan won the Xie Xide Physics Prize, Jiang Kaili won the Huang Kun Physics Prize, and Wang Weihua won the Zhou Peiyuan Physics Prize.
