The 2009 Guangdong University Swimming Championships was held in South China Normal University located in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center on October 31st and November 1st. GDUFS sent 24 athletes to Group A and B competitions, which covered a span of 42 events. During the two days, with twelve gold, thirteen silver as well as four bronze, GDUFS brought home first place in group A and earned a sold 8th place ranking in Group B.
Among the excellent athletes from GDUFS, Huang Shengjie, from the School of Management, won four gold medals. On the afternoon of November 1st, Huang won in the men’s 50 meter butterfly stroke Group A final with a time of 27.72, an advantage of 0.15 seconds over the second place finisher.
The men’s 400-meter freestyle was the focus when GDUFS sent Pan Yujun and captain Song Jianhao to compete. At the beginning, the two athletes took the lead. However, another swimmer soon caught up to them on the first line. After an intense contest, Song took second place while Pan took a solid third. Then it came to the women’s 400-meter freestyle contest, which was dominated by two athletes from GDUFS. After a tough competition, Liang Qianxin won the gold medal, but her teammate Luo Wen, the silver medal winner, was only 0.09 seconds slower.
Lin Shaona, the director of GDUFS Sports Department, said she was quite satisfied with the success of the swimming team. Lin attributed it to the diligence of the athletes and positive atmosphere of the team, especially the support from the university and logistics service. Nowadays, more colleges are cultivating new swimmers, and rivals this year were stronger than before since national leading athletes, like Zhou Jiawei, took part in the contest. GDUFS adjusted its training plan accordingly to bring home the gold.
