Student Translators Praised for Excellent Work at China ASEAN EXPO

November 6 - From November 18th to the 24th, , forty postgraduates from the School of Interpreting & Translation Studies and five students majoring in Vietnamese from the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures successfully accomplished the translation task at the Sixth ASEAN EXPO, which was held in Nanning.

On October 20th, the grand ASEAN EXPO opening ceremony was held in Nanning International Exhibition Center. Students from School of Interpreting & Translation Studies were divided into three translation teams: the written translation team, exhibition halls on-the-spot interpreting team and the main exhibition hall on-the-spot interpreting team. Zhang Yufeng and three other students worked on the written translation team in Mekong hotel near the exhibition hall. They took charge of news translation. Another five students were assigned to be responsible for the whole translation service of the branch exhibition hall in Guangxi. Other students worked in the main exhibition. They provided professional and conscientious service. Hong Lei performed consecutive interpreting at the opening ceremony of Guangxi Exhibition Hall, while Song Hongyu and Lu Juan provided interpretation for Sablis Food Corporation in the Brunei Exhibition Hall.

Other students took charge of English news, interpretation of Sino -Burma investment project negotiation meeting, ASEAN EXPO investment and financing matchmaking symposium and brief interviews between leaders before meetings. Given the compactness of meetings and the formality of the occasion, students were able to achieve remarkable success.

Apart from those who were engaged in formal meetings, there are students working in the Translation Center offering translation for merchants. And for students without a mission, they took the opportunity to learn a lot from watching their teachers conducting simultaneous interpretation.

During the EXPO, leaders of the STTS came to exhibition halls to visit students at their working posts and encouraged them to keep working hard. With support from the faculty, the students were determined to continue working to their utmost. They were sure they would live up to expectations.

On October 24th, the sixth China ASEAN EXPO drew to a successful close.

For all the students, this exhibition is a precious and unforgettable learning experience.

Short as the activity was, the students' persistence, coupled with conscientious and professional translation service gave this activity a satisfactory ending.
