First GDUFS World Culture Festival

Nov 10- The first GDUFS World Culture Festival was held on Nov 9th and was a great success.  The whole event was organized by the international students at GDUFS.

The festivities began at 2:30 pm, when the main avenue was decorated with exotic kiosks, each one displaying the characteristics of the student’s homeland. Traditional food, the main theme of the carnival, attracted a lot of people. Russian students sold soup and wine while Korean students prepared fried pudding.  Both kiosks were believed to be the hottest of the day. Students from other countries like Peru, Japan or Indonesia also brought dishes which were favored by their Chinese classmates.

"I think trying our traditional food is a direct and vivid way to get to know our people and culture, so we especially made these snacks," said Pan Cha, an Indonesian graduate wearing a sarong, a kind of Japanese clothing.

A 40-year-old Japanese student who served as a cook at the Japanese kiosk said excitedly, “It's a pleasure to introduce our culture to you and other international students. I would also like to know more about yours!"

At 7:00 in the evening, the GDUFS World Culture Festival Evening Party lifted its curtain in the Lecture Hall. Vice President Gu Yeli addressed the ceremony.

South Korean students performed with Korean traditional musical instruments. In a fashion show, students from different countries dressed in attractive national costumes. The party came to its climax with a belly dance by a Korean woman student. Hot and passionate, her dancing lit up the hall.

However, the stage was not just for the performers.  An Indonesian song, to which Indonesian students danced, was so popular that some spectators even jumped onto the stage and joined in the dancing. Chinese students also had their show time. Hip-Hop Emotion, Latin dancing, as well as Chinese Kong fu wowed the audience.

A big world came to life on that small stage that evening. In throbbing melodies and restless light, students from different countries shared in happiness. When asked the reason for holding the first World Culture Festival at GDUFS, an instructor at the Institute of Education for International Studies said that it is significant to further the communication between Chinese and foreign students.  Thus, the World Culture Festival can be a platform to promote cultural exchange, which helps GDUFS become a more international university.
