GDUFS Student Wins a Thesis Award at the Casio Cup

November 16 - An award ceremony for the second Casio Cup of Excellent Master Thesis on Sino-Japanese Academic Research was held in Japanese Research Centre in Beijing Foreign Studies University on October 31st. Song Yuanyuan, in her second year of a MA degree from the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, was the only winner from within Guangdong.  She brought home a third in the social culture direction.

The contest, which is divided into three directions - language direction, literature direction and social culture direction, represents the highest level of nationwide MA theses on Japanese studies. After several rounds, 18 of the 41 finalists, selected by the top experts on Japanese studies in China, were given awards.

Former Vice-Minister of Ministry of Culture Liu Deyou, Japanese Embassy Minister Shigeo Yamada, together with Managing Director and Business Minister of Casio Computer Co. Ltd Hiro Nakamura and other leaders, attended the ceremony to award prizes. Also in attendance was GDUFS Vice President Gu Yeli, who expressed a warm congratulations to Song Yuanyuan.

Instructor Liu Xiaoshan and many other teachers from FOALC offered full support to Song Yuanyuan before she finished her thesis. To ensure that the information was accurate, Song Yuanyuan read hundreds of books written in Japanese and consulted experts at GDUFS about Japanese ancient writings.

The head judge, Professor Nobuo Takeuchi commented on Song Yuanyuan's thesis: "It is amazing that she, as a Japanese learner, can understand the essence of Japanese ancient writings and work out such a convincing conclusion in two years."
