Romeo and Juliet - TNT Visits Again
November 10 - TNT was here once again and this time they brought the Shakespearian play, Romeo and Juliet to life in Yunshan Auditorium. This was their second time visiting GDUFS this year after they came in March with Oliver Twist.
With simple setting and delicate stage lightening, the play began in rather light atmosphere. As the story developed, there was much to enjoy: amusing scenes of everyday life, a superb performance from young man deep in affection, fair innocent maidens, entertaining angelic live statues and soothing harmonies. Though each of them acted several roles, each character was portrayed vividly. The two main performers' emotional monologue leads the play to a final climax. In the end, six players answered the curtain call by joining hands. The auditorium resounded with applause.
When the play ended, reporters from English News Website had the chance to interview several actors and actresses in the play.
When we interviewed Dan Wilder, the actor who brought the love-torn Romeo to life, we found out that it was Dan’s second time performing at GDUFS. The last time he came here was about two years ago for the play Hamlet. Dan said GDUFS students were so energetic and he enjoyed performing in the campus. As Dan mentioned, it was important to add new elements to the play to make it lively and easy to understand as well as to adjust the play according to the local culture. He found that China was a romantic country, so it was easy for Chinese audience to identify with Romeo and Juliet. When asked if there were any similarities between Romeo and himself, the handsome young man replied, "Absolutely, both of us have a lot in common, like our changeable moods; sometimes I'm angry at the world while sometimes I can be very soft." When talking about an optional job, Dan shared his inner thoughts with the reporters - he loves acting and will not give up being an actor for the rest of his life. "Money cannot buy me happiness", Dan said. He even gave up some business opportunities and happily plunged into acting.
Natalia, who played the nurse and prince, began to act when she was four. As of this year, she has been in TNT for four years. Doing Shakespeare is always what she dreamed of and she got the chance this time. When asked what is the most difficult of being an actress, Natalia smiled and said, "The hardest, for me, is to try to get better, both as an actress and a singer. I want to work all the time. This is my favorite thing to do, my life."
Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most timeless plays. TNT brought it to life here at Yunshan Auditorium and GDUFS students are eagerly anticipating the next show.
