UN Foundation Delegation visits Peking University

On October 27th, Mr. Ted Turner, Chairman of the UN Foundation Board, Mr. Timothy Wirth, the President of UN Foundation, Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, and other UN Foundation delegates visited Peking University. Wu Zhipan, Executive Vice Chair of University Council, warmly received the delegation at Tan Siu Lin Center.

A warm welcoming ceremony was held at Tan Siu Lin Center at 9:30 am; Assistant President Li Yansong hosted the welcoming ceremony. He looked back at previous communication between PKU and UN, and gave a brief introduction of the delegation. Vice Chair Wu then gave welcoming remarks, and talked about current world situation, calling on people to act together to promote the development of the world and the harmony of the civilization, especially during financial crisis. The world is becoming smaller and smaller, and we need more communication, he said, and also emphasized the importance of dialogue with young leaders. After that, Zhang Dantong, the President of Model UN at PKU, gave a brief introduction of students associations and activities in PKU, and explained the word PKU with three words, passionate, knowledge, and understanding. Finally, President Timothy Wirth gave a guest address to introduce and looked forward to the discussions with students.

After the welcoming ceremony, the delegation was divided into four groups to tour the campus and participate in four panel sessions, which are Future Reality in the Making, Promoting Communications and Mutual Understandings, Roads to Development, and Healthier and Happier Life. The delegation was impressed by PKU students’ positive attitude on trying to involve into global affairs.

After panel sessions there was a tea break at the traditional Chinese garden, Yan Nan Yuan. Delegates enjoyed Chinese tea and traditional Chinese instrument tune. The visit ended in a friendly and happy atmosphere.
