HIT in the Eyes of International Students

 薛绍扬

As we arrived in 哈尔滨, we were met by overcast skies and a cold downpour. I remember thinking two things, “I hope this is not foreshadowing things to come” and “I did not pack enough pants.” Following that rather depressing welcome we were then sent to a nine hour quarantine. My hopes for 哈尔滨 were fading fast. Fortunately, our welcome did not reflect the rest of our trip.  哈工大 and 哈尔滨 have not yet ceased to impress and/or surprise me since.
I was admittedly nervous for my first class at 哈工大, not only because it was my first day but also due to the fact that I was entering mid-semester in a level I had not yet experienced. My classmate and I quickly found ourselves signed up to participate in a skit competition with the rest of our class against other classes. Before we knew it we were already a part of the class. I could not be happier with the teachers and teaching style that I have experienced at 哈工大. In my educational experience, I have often found that many institutions rely on test scores, a degree of struggle, and a strict adherence to the set curriculum. A growing trend of drifting away from focusing on the students simply learning the material has been developing within our educational system.  Thus far, all teachers that I have found at 哈工大 have valued their students learning over sticking to a strict schedule.
哈尔滨 itself has also been a quite interesting city. What I have enjoyed most is the fact that coming to 哈尔滨 you do not simply experience Chinese culture but a multitude of cultures spanning China, Russia, and even a huge a international presence rising from the colleges. Everything from Russian architecture, to 新疆羊肉串 (lamb kabobs) combines to form 哈尔滨’s unique atmosphere and culture.

This short article is by no means a sufficient venue to fully explain or describe 哈尔滨, but I hope that it has presented a glimpse of this great city and the time I spent in it.  My 哈尔滨 experience is a unique one but not one that I am soon to forget.

Harbin...  Harbin Institute of Technology... Where is it??  That is the first three words that came to my mind when I heard about it. I didn’t know anything about China except that Beijing is the capital and the only words I know were : 我,爱 ,and你, which means I, love, and you, which I believe are the three most popular word in the world.
After three months of study at HIT, I am now able to converse with Chinese people, I know a lot of new words and Chinese grammar. Thank you HIT for employing capable and qualified teachers, which inturn has allowed me to understand the Chinese language very well.
Studying in HIT has given me another unexpectable experience, far beyond my imagination. As a result of me being here at HIT, I was very priviledged to meet people from all over the world, knowing their languages, habits, culture, and most off all them. I’m very happy to be part of such a big, warm and welcoming family like HIT.

There’s some proverb written in Chinese “学汉语到中国;学普通话来哈尔滨;学标准普通话来哈工大”, which in English means “To learn Chinese, come to China. To learn Mandarin, come to Harbin. To learn standard Mandarin, come to HIT”

I arrived in Harbin about two months ago. My first day in the city was a little scary. I didn’t know anyone or could talk Chinese. But that changed really fast. I was received very kindly and nicely. I made tons of friendship with people from all over the world and I’m also speaking a little Chinese. But that’s not all, by living on the HIT campus around so many different people from different nationalities I had the chance to learn about different cultures which made me grow a lot intellectually.

There are some unique things in life and this is one of them. Learn to deal with our differences is not easy, because we were rased in extremely different societies. But this makes us be a more flexible and opened minded person to all that might happened to us. I love here at HIT I don’t think I would be able to leave the experiences I’m having here anywhere else. I wouldn’t change this for anything!!!
