Silverdale School Celebrated China and Chinese Culture in China Week
From November 21st to 25th, Silverdale School celebrated China and Chinese culture in China Week. Many teachers in Silverdale School were Carrying out the different activities in their classes. They played an indispensable and especialy roles and the event was hugely successful in spreading Chinese culture.
On 7th November, Mrs Cathy Henderson, Assistant Headteacher / Y7 Leader discussed the China week celebrated plan with Mr. Robert Neal, the Confucius Class Manager in Silverdale School. She asked the different subject teachers to arrange different activities. She also told the reporter she would give assemblies every day on a China related theme.

Students and teachers started each day with activity workshop from 8 15 to 8 30am. It was a very relaxing way to start the day and also helped to bring teachers and students closer together. Headteacher, Mrs Storey and Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Cathy Henderson, also joined the traditional Chinese martial art and were very impressed.

The English and Media Studies Host—Richard Benn is teaching the Chinese poem GEESE.
On Monday, Mr. Richard Benn, the English and Media Studies host, taught a Chinese poem GEESE in the English wing. He was very happy to do so. He said,” It made a lovely change/ starter for all classes I imagine.”The poems were currently being colour copied. Students felt the rhythm of the Chinese poem and learnt more Chinese.

Oh, the Dragon’s body is too long!

The Art teacher Mr. Longmuir is making the dragon with year 8.
After school on Monday, the Art Department teacher Mr. Longmuir made the Chinese Dragon with the students. Mr. Longmuir told reporter,” We are doing the activity because it is fun to learn about other cultures and to make art that is inspired by Chinese art. We also like working with other departments to share ideas and different ways of doing things. We make the dragons after school on Monday and will carry on till February when it is Chinese New Year.”
On Wednesday, The food Technology’s teachers Ms. Lauren Reid and Mr. Dan Rooke made dumplings with students and staff at the after school cooking club. It was the must-be part in Chinese Week to have an authentic Chinese meal. Apart from enjoying the delicacies, which were some dumplings those done by themselvies, The students of the food club had another task to complete---trying to use chopsticks. Ms. Lauren Reid said,”It was great for the students to learn something else new and they really enjoyed it. Making dumplings help them to become more independent and inspired them to think about Chinese cuisine.”

The students really enjoyed this session as a lot of them had not tasted dumplings before! They were really pleased how they turned out and they were all successful in making them. It’s big different Chinese culture they had learnt from books and TV. That is a real-Chinese-life.
On Friday period 2, Mr. Keith Heslop taught a lesson on Chinese Inventions where the Year 7's pupils learnt about some of China's contribution to the world. E.g Iron and Steel, gunpowder, paper money, silk, printing etc...
In last week, other teachers from Geography, Religious Studies, History, Drama and deaf unit lessons added some truly Chinese theme in their lessons. Students and teachers all had a wonderful time. Silverdale School’s students employed all the knowledge they had learnt in China Week. They felt the alive Chinese. Those teachers in Silverdale School were active in China Week that attracted students easily. They played indispensable roles in China Week.
