Two achievements won “Chinese Top Ten Scientific Progresses”

On Jan.17, 2011 Chinese Top Ten Scientific Progresses and Top Ten Sci. & Tech. Progress News were announced. Two achievements from HUST were included. One was “Obtaining High-Resolution Mouse Brain Map by Microscopic Optical Sectioning Tomography” by the team of Prof. Luo Qingming from Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics. The other was “World’s Largest Laser Rapid Manufacturing Equipment” developed by the team of Prof. Shi Yusheng from School of Materials Science and Engineering.

The selection of 2011 Chinese Top Ten Scientific Progresses was carried out by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Some other selected scientific progresses were: the successful docking of Shenzhou-8 with Tiangong-1, the transformation of mouse fibroblasts into functional hepatocyte-like cells, the Geodynamic Mechanism of the Transition of Indian Summer Monsoon in Glacial Cycles, etc.

This selection firstly picked out 31 out of 233 recommended projects. The results came out after being voted by academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, consultants and chief scientists of National Plan on Key Basic Research Project (973 Plan) and directors from state key laboratories in the form of secret ballot.

Besides, some 2011 Chinese top ten sci. & tech. progress news were: Yield of Super Hybrid Rice Experimental Field Exceeds 5400kg per Acre,  First Superconducting Substation Built,  New Mechanism of Brain Neural Network Found, the First Fast Reactor Realized Grid-connected Power Generation, "Dragon"-Manned Submersible Successfully Reached 5000m Underwater, etc.

Furthermore, some 2011 world top ten sci. & tech. progress news were: Ultra-thin Nanosheets Manufacturing Methods,First Successful Transnational Flight of the Largest Solar-powered Aircraft, US Developed the World's First Biological Laser, Chinese and Foreign Scientists Completed the Potato Genome Sequencing, Japan developed the World's Fastest Computer, etc.
