Cultural Events at Confucius Institute

the Confucius Institute at Sapporo University held a Chinese culture festival in their auditorium. The festival was aimed at celebrating Chinese New Year and promoting Chinese culture, and was fully attended by Japanese citizens from Sapporo as well as Hokkaido.

Before the festival, the Chairman of Confucius Institute at Sapporo University delivered an opening speech. He briefly introduced the accomplishments achieved during the past 5 years and stated that as the development of tourism increases in Hokkaido, the Confucius Institute at Sapporo University would assume more important responsibilities in Sino-Japanese communication. The Chinese General Consul of Sapporo also delivered a speech.

The festival was divided into Chinese painting and calligraphy, Chinese folk music, Chinese songs and a martial arts performance. Chinese calligraphers and painters showcased traditional Chinese elements by writing words of blessing and painting peony and pine, which won a big round of applause from the audience.

Students and faculties of the Confucius Institute also amazed the audience by performing with traditional Chinese instruments as they sang with beautiful voices. What's more, Japanese amateurs of martial arts put the festival to its climax by performing their superb skills.

Most of the performers were Japanese fans of Chinese culture, which indicates that the foundation of a good Sino-Japanese relationship lies in the grassroots of the two groups. It is presumable that in the future the Confucius Institute at Sapporo University will continue to play its role as a culture ambassador.
