Namibia gives green light to CAF tournament despite Ebola fears

Ebola-ravaged West Africa to take part in the ninth edition of the biannual Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Women Championship scheduled next month.

A local weekly newspaper quoted the Namibia Football Association (NAF) president John Muinjo Friday saying that the tournament, scheduled to start from 11 to 25 October in Windhoek, will go ahead as planned despite an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa.

"The virus will not affect the competition... travelling fans and players will have to go through a thorough test at their respective airports before boarding a plane to Namibia.

"We know that the virus is highly contagious and therefore the NFA does not want to take any chances," Muinjo said.

Eight countries will take part in the two-week tournament, including four West African countries: Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and tournament favourites, Nigeria.

While there are no confirmed cases in the other three West African countries, 19 confirmed cases have so far been reported in Nigeria according to health officials in that country with seven deaths.

The NFA said players, officials and supporters coming from West African countries will need careful screening.

"Zambia, South Africa and Egypt are not close to Ebola affected countries and I am sure they will not have to go through as many monitoring procedures as the West African countries," Muinjo added.
