A letter from a foreign student in Beijing

Dear Students,

Please be advised …
… it has happened that Western looking students have been addressed by Chinese people, who pose as students, teachers or just people who want to speak English with you. Especially at scenic spots or places in downtown with many foreigners.  Often those who approach you are sweet, pretty young ladies, who are very insistent, and hard to refuse.
They ask students to go to have a drink with them, to a teahouse, to a bar, to sing Karaoke or to go to a restaurant. They also often offer massage, or to see an art exhibition.
Be careful when it comes to spending money. Some students lost even hundreds of RMB for a cup of tea, or even thousands of RMB for a visit in a Karaoke bar.
You are here to learn Chinese and more about the Chinese Culture and the people. To get in contact with locals is a very interesting aim of your stay here and should be done to improve your skills in communicating.
However always keep above in mind, especially with people who you don’t know.

Have a nice stay in Beijing and enjoy studying at the University!
